‘Highrise senior living’ is also high-end: inside The Cardinal’s new 18-story tower

A new 18-story tower in the heart of North Hills Midtown District promises to “redefine” senior living.

The Cardinal at North Hills this week officially opened its East Tower as part of a two-year expansion, doubling its size and adding 191 apartments — 151 independent living and 40 assisted living.

The senior housing complex, which launched in 2017, is between Six Forks Road and St. Albans Road, east of the main North Hills shopping center, which is also undergoing a major expansion.

As Raleigh consistently ranks among the nation’s best places for retirees to live, the complex said it’s faced growing demand in the rental market for continuing care retirement housing.

“The expansion came about in response,” said Jaime Pacheco, The Cardinal’s general manager, in a release. “This is the first time since 2017 that we’ve had this type of availability.”

The tower includes one-, two- and three-bedroom plans, including club level and penthouse options with city views, ranging from 1,000 to 3,511 square feet. The focus is on active adults, with a range of health care if needed and “five-star everything.”

Amenities include valet parking, multiple dining venues, fitness center, libraries with computer centers, beauty salon, gardens, walking trails and programs. Health care is also available with a 24/7 licensed care team.

The price tag: A one-bedroom apartment starts at around $6,100 per month, including daily meals and housekeeping.

Kisco Senior Living is the owner of the complex. It owns centers in several states, including six others in Raleigh, Cary and Greensboro.

The project is a joint venture with Welltower, based in Ohio, a real estate investment trust that specializes in funding real estate for health-care infrastructure.
