PERFORMING ARTS
LEAN ENSEMBLE
“Mitchelville”
I’ve carefully chosen my words to bring to you directly my motivation for pointing out why we are leading and characterizing this installment of our Cultural Compendium with this unique theatrical production of “Mitchelville.”
“Mitchelville” is a world premiere.
“Mitchelville” is commissioned cultural project.
“Mitchelville” honors our local history and culture.
This astonishing production is by writer and playwright Aurin Squire and is directed by Cezar Williams and features Malik Ali, Reginald L. Barnes, Nate Entz, Trevor Latez Hayes, Philip Kershaw, Katherine Nora LeRoy-Lawson and Courtney Thomas. When a young man tries to save his Gullah family home, he dives into the history of his family lineage, the Civil War and the first town of Black freedmen in America. “Mitchelville” is a story about learning from the past, saving for the future and keeping a tradition going.
