High winds Tuesday knocked out power around Erie. More gusts are in Wednesday's forecast

Fierce winds downed trees, knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers and led to road closures in Erie County on Tuesday, and the threat of high-speed gusts is likely to persist for much of Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a wind advisory for Erie and Crawford counties, and for Ashtabula County, Ohio, until Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Advisories also are in effect from weather service local forecasting offices for a greater period of the day in Warren, Venango, Forest and Mercer counties, and Chautauqua County, New York, is under both a wind advisory and a winter weather advisory.

Wind advisory in Erie, Crawford, Ashtabula counties

Winds will be from the west at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

While not forecast to be as strong as Tuesday's damaging winds, the weather service in Cleveland indicates Wednesday's gusts could blow around unsecured objects, bring down tree limbs and result in a few power outages.

Presque Isle State Park will remain closed until fallen trees are cleared and downed power lines repaired. The park said it will reopen in stages as crews work cleaning up the debris as conditions improve.

Wind advisory in Venango, Mercer, Forest, Warren counties

The weather service in Pittsburgh has set a wind advisory Wednesday until 7 p.m. in Venango, Mercer and Forest counties. Winds will be from the southwest at 20 to 25 mph and gust to 50 mph at times.

The weather service in State College has a wind advisory in place Wednesday until 6 p.m. in Warren County. Winds will be from the southwest at 15 mph to 25 mph and gust to 45 to 55 mph at times.

Winter weather, wind advisories in Chautauqua County, New York

The weather service in Buffalo has issued a wind advisory Wednesday until 7 p.m. for Jamestown and other Chautauqua communities. Southwest winds of 30 to 40 mph will gust at times to 50 mph, according to the forecast.

A winter weather advisory goes into effect Wednesday at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to run through Thursday at 7 p.m. The forecast calls for new snowfall of 4 inches to 8 inches in addition to the high winds. Travel could be difficult at times.

Is there more windy weather on the way to northwestern Pa.?

Yes, according to the weather service.

The Cleveland forecasting office indicates there is the potential for another strong storm to reach the area Friday and into the weekend, delivering strong, gusty winds and snowfall. There could be lake-effect snow across the snowbelt Saturday and Sunday. Arctic air behind the system will move in next week, with the possibility of low wind chills.

The weather service in Buffalo has a similar forecast, including the possibility of a "significant" lake-effect snow event Saturday through at least Sunday.
