High school teacher having affair with student busted by husband, police say
A Pennsylvania high school teacher was charged with having sex with one of her students after her husband reported them to police.
Cops said Olivia Ortz, 26, had a relationship with a 17-year-old girl who attended Wilmington High School, the New Castle News reported. Ortz was the music and choir teacher at the school about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Cody Ortz, Olivia’s husband, discovered the relationship after a group music trip to Florida in April and immediately reported it, according to the New Castle News. Cody Ortz is a conductor for hire who directed the school’s musical this year and often worked at Wilmington High on other projects.
Police said Olivia Ortz’s relationship with the teen girl began in March and continued into May – even after Cody Ortz found out. The cops said Olivia Ortz and the teen met for physical sexual encounters several times while Cody Ortz was not home, the New Castle News reported.
As an employee contracted by a high school, Cody Ortz was required to report any sexual exploitation, abuse, or misconduct if he suspected it. Olivia Ortz was suspended from her job immediately after her husband reported her; she later resigned.
Officers searched the Ortzes’ home May 5 and seized Olivia’s iPad and cellphone, Youngstown NBC affiliate WFMJ reported. Despite that, Ortz and the teen continued communicating using Spotify’s messaging platform, police said.
The 17-year-old told police that she went to Ortz’s home after her husband found out but only to “comfort” her, according to Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE.
Communication between the two was only cut off after the teenager’s father seized all her electronics, WFMJ reported.
Olivia Ortz was charged Friday with two counts of intercourse/sexual contact with a school student and one count of unlawful contact with a minor for sexual offenses, according to the New Castle News. However, she didn’t immediately turn herself in, even singing in a concert on Sunday prior to her surrender on Monday.
Ortz posted $150,000 bail and was released shortly afterward.
