High school sweethearts killed in collision with truck in Tennessee

A boyfriend and girlfriend who recently graduated from high school were killed when their Jeep collided with a truck in Tennessee.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol report says that a commercial truck hit the driver’s side of the vehicle driven by Austin Moffitt, 18, after the teen didn’t stop at an intersection around 10:30 p.m. Thursday in Dunlap — about 28 miles northwest from Chattanooga, The Charlotte Observer reports.

Moffitt was accompanied in the car by his girlfriend, 19-year-old Alexis McCann, both of whom were reported to be wearing their seatbelts.

The truck driver, who also had their seatbelt on, was uninjured, the outlet reports.

Moffitt and McCann both attended Sequatchie County High School together and graduated in May.

Moffitt was remembered in an obituary for his love of hunting, fishing the Tennessee Volunteers, and for being “a true Momma’s boy.”

Friends and family of Moffitt and McCann took to Facebook to mourn the tragic and sudden loss of the young couple.

“Our hearts are heavy this morning,” read a post from Sequatchie County Football, for which Moffitt played. “Austin was a wonderful young man and an outstanding football player. He will always be remembered in our hearts. Alexis was his biggest fan. Once an Indian, always an Indian.”

“Austin Moffitt was such a great young man and player,” wrote Moffitt’s former coach, Shawn Cooley. “Alexis was such a sweet girl and a great student. She worked extremely hard. This is such a devastating loss for the community. They will both be missed by many. Pray for these families.”

“Rest easy y’all was both some of the kindest people anybody could ask for,” wrote Dalton Mcdaniel.
