HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Sturgis softball wins first game with a double digit comeback

The Sturgis softball team picked up their first win of the season as they beat Nantucket (1-1) 16-11 after being down 11 points going into the 4th inning on Thursday. Molly Reino was 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBIs, three stolen bases, and an inside the park home run for Sturgis (1-2). Elsa Wienser pitched all seven innings with 14 strikeouts, and gave up six earned runs.

Softball

Carver 18, Mashpee 1: The Falcons lost in their home opener. Michelle Gonsalves and Jordan Egan each had a hit for Mahspee.

Dennis-Yarmouth 20, Nauset 5: The Dolphins (3-1) beat the Warriors (1-3) on the road.

Rockland 17, Sandwich 4: The Blue Knights (0-3) lost in a home game.

Baseball

Sandwich 9, Rockland 0: The Blue Knights (1-1) picked up their first win of the season as Connor Finn pitched a hitless 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts. Matt Sullivan had tow doubles, while five Sandwich players recorded two hits and 12 total players had at least one hit.

Nauset 8, Dennis-Yarmouth 6: The Warriors (3-1) recorded the win over the Dolphins (2-3). RJ Delcourt was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a scored run for D-Y.

Mashpee 10, Carver 6: The Falcons (1-2) picked up their first win of the season, as Nick Sculos picked up his first varsity win and Andrew Fancher had his first varsity save. Michael McGrail had three hits and three RBIs for Mashpee.

Sturgis West 5, Nantucket 0: The Navigators (1-1) picked up their first win of the season as they shutout the Whalers (0-3).

Boys Lacrosse

Sandwich 14, Middleborough 0: The Blue Knights (4-2) snapped a two game slide with their first shutout win of the season. Shane Corcoran finished with 14 saves in goal, while Cole Rodgers (five goals, four assists) and Dan Oman (four goals, one assist) led the offense. Kurt Moniz (two goals, one assist), Jack Connolly (one goal, two assists), Harry Delman (one goal, one assist), Sullivan Gaffney (one assist, seven ground balls), and Michael Chetwynd (first varsity goal) also contributed in the win.

Nauset 16, Martha’s Vineyard 5: Logan Poulin led the way with four goals as the Warriors (3-1) beat the Vineyarders (1-2). Michael Flynn, Colby Smith, Ryder Holm, Sawyer McCutchen, and Joey Berardi (one assist) each scored twice, while Riley Meehan (three assists) and Sam Mayhew each added one goal for Nauset.

Falmouth Academy 14, Dennis-Yarmouth 7: The Mariners (1-1) won their first game of the season as they beat the Dolphins (1-3). Christian Hanoian (three assists) and Matt Brown (one assist) each scored five goals, while Wyatt Thornton (one goal and two assists), Will Dubreuil (two goals), and Cian Davis (one goal) also chipped in on offense for Falmouth Academy. Charlie Rickard won 70% of the faceoffs, Hanoian and Drew Reeves played well on defense, and Tom Tortora finished with 20 saves in net.

Monomoy 16, Sturgis 4: Tamer Khalil led the Sharks (5-0) offense with five goals and two assists in a victory over Sturgis (0-3). Joey McKeen (three goals), Jed Zimmerman (two goals, two assists), Christian Whittle (two goals, one assist), Owen Ramler (one goal, two assists), Noah Metters (one goal), Niko Vujosevic (one goal), and Max Barrett (one goal) all contributed on offense for Monomoy. The Sharks defense was led by Braeden Darling, Barrett, Max Ramler, Jackson Morneau, and Cole Strzepek, while Jake Giorgio had nine saves in goal.

St. John Paul II 14, Mashpee 13 (OT): Jack Hyde sent the game into overtime with seconds left, while Taylor Richardson scored the winner for the Lions (2-1) as they beat the Falcons (1-5).

Nantucket 13, Barnstable 5: The Whalers moved to 3-1, while the Red Hawks fall to 0-4.

Girls Lacrosse

Nantucket 17, Barnstable 5: The Whalers (5-0) remain unbeaten with their fifth straight win as they beat the Red Hawks (2-2). Bailey Lower scored seven goals, dished out four assists, and had six draw7 controls, while Emerson Pekarcik scored six goals, had four assists, and added three draw controls for Nantucket. Mayson Lower (tow goals, four draw controls), Cydney Mosscrop (one goals, three assists), Dylan Damian (one goal), and Claire Misurelli (five saves) all contributed in the win.

Chloe Egan (two goals), Alyssa McEneaney (one goal, five ground balls), Claire Kayajan(one goal), Caroline Curley (one goal), Shelby Locascio (one assist), Riley Croteau (one assist), and Morgan Mueller (11 saves) all contributed for Barnstable.

Upper Cape 13, GNBVT 2: Adryanna Turner scored eight goals that led the Rams (3-1) to the road win. Caitlin Greeley scored twice two, while Hanna Guay, Alaina Hines and Emma Hanoian each added a goal. Kai’ana Perez and Macee Pina created space offensively, while Skylar Rinta and Ally Webb held down the crease on defense.

Dennis-Yarmouth 11, Falmouth Academy 9: The Dolphins (1-2) picked up their first win of the season as they beat the Mariners (0-3). Faye McGuire scored six goals, while Lizzy Blauer, Lexi Kalkanis, and Natalie Hurlbut each added a goal for Falmouth Academy. Willow Wakefield had 11 saves in goal.

Nauset 14, Cape Cod Academy 12: The Warriors (3-1) handed the Seahawks (2-1) their first loss of the season in a close game. Julia Kipperman scored six times, Allie Higgins and Sienna Reeves each had three goals, and Coral Punch and Laurel Ricard each added on goal for Nauset.

Notre Dame Academy-Hingham 18, Falmouth 2: The Clippers fall to 0-3.

Monomoy 14, Sturgis East 4: The Sharks (3-2) have won three of their last four as they beat the Storm (0-3).

Girls Golf

Nauset 4.5, Falmouth 1.5: The Warriors move to 1-1, while the Clippers fall to 0-5. Sophie Sullivan (5&3), Megan Dalmau (4&2), Sophia Silvestri (5&4), and Alexa Azure (4&3) each scored a point for Nauset. Avery Johnsen (4&3) scored a point for Falmouth.

Monomoy 5, Dennis-Yarmouth 1: The Sharks (4-0) picked up the win over the Dolphins at Bass River Golf Course. Yu Ying Zou (4&3), Ava LaRacco (3&2), Sally Watson (5&4), Emily Layton (5&4), and Georgia Storey (5&3) each scored a point for Monomoy. Kendra Hayes scored the lone point for D-Y.

Unified Track and Field

Barnstable and Nauset met in their first meet of the season.

Shawn Fredo, Izaiah Stoddard, Shaun Murphy, and David Perira set a Barnstable school record in the 4x100m relay with a time of 1:15.10.

Aryssa Guavin led the girls team in the 100m with a time of 21.09, while eighth grader David Pereira posted a time of 14.56 in the 100m in his frist time running that race.

In the field events, Molly Fredo led the girls with a long jump of 10’11”. Owen Welch Viens and Shaun Murphy threw the shot put for the boys, and Izaiah Stoddard set a new school record in the javelin with a throw of 52’6”.

Sailing

Nantucket 3, Bishop Stang 0: The Whalers sailed to the victory.

St. John Paul II 3, Monomoy 0: The Lions picked up the win over the Sharks.
