High school roundup: Portsmouth boys stay unbeaten; Trinity hockey team wins first game
Jan. 6—Portsmouth High rallied from an eight-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to beat host Salem 73-69 on Friday night in a battle of Division I boys basketball unbeatens.
Point guard Isaiah Reis scored a team-high 15 points, and Miles de Iongh and Ryan Swartz added 14 and 13 points, respectively, as Portsmouth improved to 4-0. Cote Bellaud chipped in 10 points.
The Clippers dominated the glass, especially in the fourth quarter when they hit 15 of 26 free throws. Salem went to the foul line 12 times in the entire game, making eight.
Zack Sangermano hit five 3-pointers and shared team-high honors (21 points) with Ryan Morse. Brock James added 17 points for Salem (4-1), which led 52-44 with seven minutes remaining.
"We were down pretty much the whole game and then I look up and we're winning, which was very good to see," said Portsmouth coach Tyrece Gibbs.
Said Salem coach Rob McLaughlin: "We knew tonight would be a good test for us to see where we stood. We have to clean some stuff up. ...
"But I'm proud of how our guys fight. They don't quit and they have each other's back. And I'll take that every night of the week."

Sam Maurice added a goal and three assists for the Pioneers, who won their first game in five tries. Brennan Walsh also scored a goal. Dom Trepanier and Ryan Lokken scored for the Cardinals (4-2).
