GIRLS LACROSSE

Division I

Barrington 12, East Greenwich 11

With the game on the line, Anna Lombardi knew it time to prove she’s capable of being the leader the Barrington girls lacrosse team needs this season.

Then she went out and showed why.

After seeing a three-goal second-half lead disappear and trailing by a goal with under two minutes left, Lombardi came through in a big way for the Eagles. The All-Stater scored the game-tying goal and, with 37 seconds left, netted the game-winner with 37 seconds left in a 12-11 win over the Avengers.

“We have a strong attack, we have freshmen coming in and we can all do amazing things on attack,” Lombardi said, “but ultimately when we’re tied up and I know I need a goal, I’m going to make it happen.”

The game was the first of the season for Barrington, which had its 2023 season end at the hand of East Greenwich via a 13-11 loss in the Division I semifinals.

Monday’s matchup was what you’d expect from two championship contenders and Barrington held a 6-5 edge at halftime – thanks in part of three goals from Alexandria Hope – before extending the lead to 8-5 in the third quarter.

The Avengers’ persistent offensive attack starting piling on goals and when Lombardi went to the sidelines with an injury, EG took advantage in the draw circle and continued to make the most of every possession.

East Greenwich took an 11-10 lead late in the fourth quarter when freshman Ava Halvorsen scored her third goal of the night, but with over 90 seconds left the game was hardly over.

Lombardi won the next draw and came up with the game-tying goal. While she couldn’t secure a win on the next draw, an East Greenwich turnover gave Barrington the ball back. The Eagles worked it up the field and Lombardi drew a shooting space call and followed it by scoring from the free position with 37 seconds left.

Halvorsen was EG’s leading scorer and Maeve Kiernan and Julia Moore both had two goals in the loss.

Lombardi led Barrington with four goals, Hope had three and five other Eagles had the remaining scores.
