A high school is mourning the loss of three students who died in a Georgia crash, news outlets reported.

A fourth person also died, and a fifth was seriously hurt when an Audi veered off a highway , Georgia State Patrol said on Sunday, Oct. 30.

The Audi was traveling through Chattooga County when it approached a curve. The car then left the road and went onto a shoulder and a driveway before it “rotated and overturned, coming to an uncontrolled final rest upright,” troopers told McClatchy News in an email.

An adult driver and two passengers died at the scene of the single-car crash, officials said.

Two other people who had been riding in the car were taken to a hospital in Rome. One of the passengers died at the hospital, and another person — an adult — was in critical condition, according to state troopers.

Three of the people who died in the crash attended Chattooga High School, roughly 90 miles northwest of Atlanta, WXIA and WTVC reported.

In response to McClatchy News’ request for information, Superintendent Jared Hosmer in an email wrote that he “received information overnight of an automobile accident that claimed the life of four people, three of which are Chattooga High School students. Please be in prayer for the families of all that have been affected by this terrible tragedy.”

The district said staff will be available to help others and announced it was scheduling an event to offer support on Oct. 31. Counselors are expected to be on the campus on Nov. 1, according to a Facebook post.

“Heartbroken is the only word that comes to mind as we have lost 3 of our own,” the school’s football team wrote on social media. “Please pray for the families and friends.”

As of Oct. 30, state troopers continued to investigate the crash, which was reported at about 12:30 a.m. along State Highway 114. It happened near the northwest Georgia town of Lyerly.

The Chattooga County School District didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Oct. 30.
