The high school girls hockey players who were named 2024 Daily News All-Stars

After combing over statistics and results, and with the guidance of local athletic directors and coaches, we at the Daily News selected All-Stars for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls hockey, boys and girls swimming, boys and girls track and field, gymnastics, skiing and boys and girls wrestling.

Although the sports and skill sets may vary, there’s no denying that this group put up otherworldly numbers this winter while helping their respective teams find success – whether that be on the court, field, ice, mat or track, or in the gym or pool.

The Daily News presents its 2023-24 All-Stars for girls hockey:

Avery Bent, Dover-Sherborn

The captain, center and lone senior on the Hopkinton/Dover-Sherborn co-op team was named a Tri-Valley League all-star after scoring four goals with five assists, finishing her varsity career with 20 goals and 14 assists. “As our only senior, Avery was a great leader that helped create a positive culture for a team with many younger players,” said Hopkinton/D-S coach Ronald Chin. “Avery set the example on the ice in games and practices with her play and voice.”

Izzy Brown, Franklin

The junior goaltender was a brick wall once again this winter, notching a .923 save percentage and a 2.67 goals against average on her way to a third straight Hockomock League all-star nod. “Izzy’s been our backbone all year and constantly steps up to make big saves in big moments,” said Panthers coach Mike Lubin, whose team reached the Division 1 state tournament.

Addy Cagan, Algonquin

The sophomore goalie was a major factor in Algonquin reaching another Division 2 state semifinals, earning the program’s 7th Player Award while notching a .920 save percentage and a 1.74 goals against average along with seven shutouts. “Addy’s determination and drive has proven that she is a formidable force against opponents and that she is only going to continue to be that brick wall that the Titans need,” said Titans coach Tina Beauchemin. Cagan enjoys doing jiu jitsu and Muay Thai, baking, sketching and walking her dogs.

Mackenzie Coleman, Framingham

This senior defenseman locked down the Flyers’ blue line, scoring five goals and dishing out six assists to being her career totals to 11 goals and 14 assists. The first-team Bay State Conference all-star was also selected to the MSHCA Senior All-Star Game. “Mackenzie is the type of player that every coach wants – tenacious, athletic, humble and committed to her team,” said Flyers coach Casey Diana. “She had a stellar career on the blue line and was an offensive presence as well. She leads by example.”

Maggie Connors, Natick

The junior captain and defenseman scored eight goals and dished out 14 assists while holding down the blue line for the Redhawks. The team MVP, Connors earned a first-team Bay State Conference all-star nod in helping Natick finish 12-8-1 and reach the Division 1 state tournament. In three varsity seasons, Connors has scored 16 goals with 45 assists. A National Honor Society member, Connors also plays soccer and softball at Natick.

Coco Curran, Weston

The senior center could not have done much more to establish herself as one of the best to come through the Wayland/Weston program, capping her career with a Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League all-conference selection after being all-league in 2023. A two-year captain, Curran scored 18 goals with 18 assists this winter to give her 29 goals and 28 assists as a Warcat. “Coco is an incredibly reliable and consistent player,” said W/W coach Jess Boehmer. “She leads by example with her sportsmanship, and she sets the tempo for each game with her determined attitude.” Curran will head to Boston University in the fall.

Bryn Domolky, Algonquin

A power forward and two-way player, this senior captain and two-time returning Daily News All-Star finished her high school career with 32 goals and 60 assists after a six-goal, 18-assist final campaign in the maroon and gold. “(Bryn) was our passionate & vocal leader and continued to show her playmaking skills this season,” said coach Tina Beauchemin of the MSHCA Senior All-Star. “She always played with grit and strived to be the best version of herself at all times while constantly supporting her teammates. Bryn is all heart and soul.” A varsity lacrosse player as well, Domolky will head to Northeastern University after studying abroad in Greece for the first semester next fall.

Julia Flynn, Franklin

A junior captain and center, Flynn scored 21 goals and notched 12 assists to earn Panthers team MVP honors and bring her three-year varsity totals to 53 goals and 26 assists (79 points). A three-time Hockomock League all-star, Flynn helped lead the Panthers to the Division 1 state tournament. “Julia has a high hockey IQ, tremendous work ethic and is an elite goal scorer and playmaker,” said Franklin coach Mike Lubin.

Harper Friedholm, Lincoln-Sudbury

This senior two-time returning Daily News All-Star was once again the Warriors’ catalyst, scoring 16 goals with 13 assists as L-S went 18-3-1 and reached the Division 1 Sweet 16. In spearheading the L-S attack, Friedholm won an unprecedented third consecutive Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League MVP award. “Best player in the league,” said L-S coach Paul Hardy. A volleyball and lacrosse standout at L-S who helped win a Division 1 state title in the latter last spring, Friedholm will play lax at Cornell University.

Tatum Friedholm, Lincoln-Sudbury

The freshman made an immediate impression as her older sister left a lasting one, netting eight goals and distributing 14 assists to earn Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League all-conference honors. “Always a threat to score,” said L-S coach Paul Hardy. Friedholm is also a lacrosse standout for the Warriors.

The senior captain closed out her prolific Algonquin co-op career continuing to find the net at a dizzying pace, potting 20 goals (including 7 game-winners) with 12 assists to earn a second straight team MVP honor and an MSHCA Senior All-Star nod as the Titans reached the Division 2 state semifinals. Johns finished her career with 84 goals (2nd all-time in program) and 35 assists for 119 points (3rd all-time in the program). “Emily is a slick grinder with a nose for the net and a lethal shot,” said Algonquin coach Tina Beauchemin. “She always has played with tenacity and determination with a never-quit attitude. … She was our quiet leader, but extremely effective as she led by example.” The National Honor Society member who played field hockey and plays softball for the Gaels, Johns will head to Worcester State to study psychology and play ice hockey.

Brenna Joyce, Algonquin

This sophomore defenseman did great work on the blue line, collecting six goals and seven assists to bring her two-year totals to 12 and 11, and leading the Titans in plus/minus with a plus-23 as Algonquin reached the Division 2 state semifinals. “Brenna gives 110 percent at all times, has a no-quit attitude and plays with passion,” said Algonquin coach Tina Beauchemin. An avid rower who competed in the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida, in 2023, Joyce also enjoys ceramics and hopes to one day study psychiatry on a pre-med track while playing hockey.

This junior “shut-down defender,” as L-S coach Paul Hardy called her, held down the L-S blue line, scoring five goals with 11 assists. In helping lead L-S to an 18-3-1 season, Leverone earned a second straight Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League all-star honor. Leverone was also a Daily News Field Hockey All-Star.

Sophia Luoni, Natick

The freshman goaltender stepped right into the crease and looked like a savvy veteran for the Redhawks on her way to Bay State Conference all-star honors. In 20 games, Luoni gave up just 25 goals for a 1.25 goals against average while facing an average of 20 shots per outing in her first varsity campaign. Luoni backstopped the Redhawks to a 12-8-1 finish and the Division 1 state tournament, which ended with a 1-0 loss to North Andover.

Lauren O’Malley, Hudson

The junior defenseman for the Algonquin co-op scored six goals with eight assists to bring her career totals to 14 goals and 24 assists for the Titans along with a career plus/minus of plus-56. “Being on defense, Lauren doesn’t get the accolades of her forward teammates, but she has stepped up as a leader and plays with total toughness and heart,” said coach Tina Beauchemin. A center back in soccer, O’Malley was also a Daily News Softball All-Star last spring and continues her success on the diamond for the Hawks. She hopes to major in nursing in college while continuing her athletic career.

Ally Quinn, Lincoln-Sudbury

The junior forward scored six goals and dished out 12 assists to earn Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League all-star honors for the 18-3-1 Warriors. “Ally is one of the most complete players in the league,” said L-S coach Paul Hardy. Quinn is also a field hockey and lacrosse standout for the Warriors.

Molly Ross, Weston

A Weston senior, Ross scored 18 goals and dished out 15 assists on her way to a second straight Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League all-star honor for the Wayland/Weston co-op. She scored 28 goals with 23 assists in her high school career. “Molly plays with determination and speed to find the net. She has a great shot, but also capitalizes on rebounds to score gritty goals in front of the net,” said W/W coach Jess Boehmer. “What her stats don’t show is that she also filled in at every position we needed her to.” Ross will be attending the University of Michigan, where she will study management and entrepreneurship at the Ross School of Business.
