High school football: Clovis North remains perfect, Central and Clovis East put on a show

The Bee’s top-ranked Clovis North football team passed another big test Friday in the Tri-River Athletic Conference.

This time, the Broncos defeated No. 7 Clovis West 34-27 in a high school football game at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

“They challenged us defensively,” Clovis North coach Mike Jacot said. “Their defense came after us and they know what we’re going to to do. I’m proud the way our kids handled adversity today.”

Clovis North stays unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the TRAC, but it wasn’t easy against the defending conference champions.

Clovis West had a 21-14 lead with 8 minutes left in the third quarter.

The Broncos’ Andrew Chavez got in the end zone, too, on a 3-yard run with 4 minutes remaining.

Clovis North is eyeing an outright TRAC title, but needs to beat Buchanan and Central to wrap up league play.

Shootout between Central and Clovis East

The scoreboard stayed busy at Koligian Stadium.

The No. 9-ranked Grizzlies and No. 3 Timberwolves went back and forth before David Marquez’s 16-yard run sealed Central’s 58-55 victory.

“I was proud of them for competing,” Central coach Kyle BIggs said. “That’s all I asked them to do is compete for 48 minutes. That’s what they did.”

Clovis East made it interesting after Marquez’s touchdown.

Ty Miller completed a 43-yard touchdown to Aidan Wilson.

The Timberwolves went for an onside kick with seconds remaining, but the Grizzlies recovered the ball to win the game.

Marquez finished the game with three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns.

“Dave’s a grinder, man,” Biggs said. “He just works his butt off. He works really hard and I’m really happy to see him having some success.”

Miller passed for six touchdowns for Clovis East.

Clovis holds strong against Buchanan

No. 12 Clovis did enough to defeat Buchanan 21-13 at Lamonica Stadium.

The Cougars kept pace with Clovis North with the win to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the TRAC.

Clovis was coming off a 24-7 loss to the Broncos last week.

The Cougars will face Clovis East and Clovis West to wrap up TRAC play.
