HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: TRN Top 10 rankings get shaken up
The TRN Top 10 is subjective and represents a team’s relevance in its district and regional playoffs. However, unlike the football version, head-to-head matchups may be weighted more since it’s not uncommon for teams in lower classifications to beat those in higher. But if a team in a higher classification doesn’t project as well in its district or region, then an opponent it may have a win against could be ranked higher. Record and preseason ranking are in parenthesis.
GIRLS TRN TOP 10
1. Nocona (22-2, 1) – Nocona rolled to two easy wins last week, but its first big test of District 9-2A action is on the horizon.
2. Windthorst (13-4, 3) – That’s because the Lady Indians are visiting Windthorst on Tuesday. And while Nocona won both meetings with Windthorst decisively last season, the Trojanettes still represent the biggest challenge to Nocona’s district title hopes.

3. Newcastle (21-1, 4) – But who will challenge Newcastle in District 21-A? After blowing out Throckmorton a couple weeks ago, the answer looks like no one.
4. City View (12-11, 8) – It’s going to be hard to top the story that manifested during City View’s come-from-behind victory against Holliday on Friday. It was emotional and inspirational with the Lady Mustangs playing for their coach, Heath Aldrich, who was diagnosed with cancer Thursday.
5. Holliday (13-7, 2) – There’s no reason to get very down on the Lady Eagles. They struggled to score in the fourth quarter, but for the first three, they had outplayed City View. Now they just have to go on the road and take one back from the Lady Mustangs.
6. Harrold (16-2, 5) – There’s a big game coming in Harrold, with Electra visiting Tuesday, although no one in District 16-A has been able to push these young, talented Lady Hornets.
7. Throckmorton (20-2, 6) – The Lady Hounds and Harrold did each drop a spot in these rankings but through no fault of their own. It’s about showing respect to City View for its win Friday.
8. Burkburnett (13-7, 8) – The expectation was Burkburnett and Sanger would separate from the rest of the district and contend for the 7-4A title. It’s already happened.
9. Electra (17-8, 9) – The Lady Tigers have just one district loss, and it’s to Harrold. They get a chance to avenge it Tuesday.
10. Jacksboro (12-12, NR) – Jacksboro sneaks back into the rankings despite being idle Friday. This is due to Iowa Park’s upset loss to Henrietta that put the Tigerettes alone in third place in District 7-3A.
Dropped out – Iowa Park (10).
BOYS TRN TOP 10
1. Benjamin (10-0, 1) – Freshman Keegan Hayes leads the area in two stats. The first is assists with 8.6 per game. The other is triple-doubles. He had his second Friday, scoring 10 points with 13 rebounds and 18 assists. Teammate Grayson Rigdon was two steals away from having his first triple-double, although he does have one quadruple double.
2. Holliday (21-2, 2) – Keitenn Bristow is playing on another level right now. We’re not sure anyone in the area can match up with him. At least, we haven’t seen anyone do it to date.
3. Burkburnett (16-7, 3) – When you run the floor like the Bulldogs, a night off is well earned. They’re back in action Tuesday with a visit to Old High.
4. Knox City (18-2, 4) – Knox City was also off Friday, and it jumps back into action Tuesday with a tough matchup against Aspermont.
5. Hirschi (8-10, 5) – Hirschi is the only team in District 7-4A with an overall record under .500. In fact, the Huskies are the only team with fewer than 16 wins for the season. Their 17-point win against Sanger shows that the overall record isn’t all that important. It’s all about strength of schedule.
6. Nocona (14-11, 9) – Nocona bounds up the rankings after several TRN Top 10 teams suffered losses Friday. And the Indians were almost among the number, narrowly holding off Seymour, 29-28. Javier Gaytan scored 20 for the Indians.
7. Electra (19-3, 10) – Electra needed a rebound game after losing to Benjamin on Tuesday, and it got one, blasting Chillicothe, 83-9.
8. WFHS (18-8, 6) – The Coyotes wanted a better start to the District 7-4A season, instead of a 67-49 loss to Gainesville. There just isn’t an easy game in this district.
9. Bowie (14-12, NR) – Welcome the Jackrabbits to this year TRN Top 10 after an upset win over Vernon. Although, it’s hard to consider any time Bowie successfully defends its home court an upset.
10. Vernon (15-6, 7) – Friday just felt like a trap game for the Lions, and it proved to be one. Now, Vernon has to do its best Taylor Swift impersonation and “Shake It Off” before visiting Holliday on Tuesday.
Dropped out – City View (8)
TUESDAY’S GAMES TO WATCH
GIRLS
City View at Iowa Park – The Lady Mustangs can’t have a letdown following Friday’s big win over Holliday. Raylee Huse and the Lady Hawks can’t be taken lightly. City View won the first meeting, 46-36.
Nocona at Windthorst – These aren’t just the top two teams in District 9-2A. Right now, they’re the top two teams in the TRN Top 10.
Electra at Harrold – Harrold won the first meeting, 70-33. Electra obviously has a lot of ground to make up if it wants to get its share of the District 16-A title.
BOYS
Aledo at Rider – The Raiders are currently fourth in District 5-5A. Aledo is just a game back in fifth. Playoff implications abound.
Graham at Glen Rose – Both teams opened District 6-4A with a win. This game could provide some insight into Graham’s district title hopes.
Burkburnett at WFHS – The Coyotes didn’t get the start they wanted in District 7-4A, losing by 18 to Gainesville. No respite for Old High. This is Burk’s district opener.
Vernon at Holliday – This was almost a showdown between undefeated teams in District 7-3A action, but Bowie spoiled it by edging Vernon on Friday. Still, this is a big game in the area’s most competitive district.
City View at Iowa Park – These two are currently tied for fourth in District 7-3A. City View is the favorite, but Iowa Park is a threat.
Wellington at Quanah – Both teams opened District 2-2A with a win and have strong overall records.
Nocona at Windthorst – Windthorst is a savvy dark horse pick in District 9-2A. They have size that can give any team issues, even the district favorite.
Knox City at Aspermont – Aspermont has been Knox City’s biggest district challenge in recent memory. A win here gives Knox City even more control over 16-A.
