HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: More upsets bring more shakeup to the TRN Top 10 rankings
The TRN Top 10 is subjective and represents a team’s relevance in its district and regional playoffs. However, unlike the football version, head-to-head matchups may be weighted more since it’s not uncommon for teams in lower classifications to beat those in higher. But if a team in a higher classification doesn’t project as well in its district or region, then an opponent it may have a win against could be ranked higher. Record and preseason ranking are in parenthesis.
GIRLS TRN TOP 10
1. Nocona (23-2, 1) – Test passed. With flying colors. The Lady Indians rolled past Windthorst, 51-27, further establishing themselves as the top team in District 9-2A, the Wichita Falls area and possibly Region II-2A.
2. Newcastle (22-1, 3) – It would be fun to see Nocona and Newcastle play this season. A warm-up game before the playoffs start would be the only chance. Each team is among the elite in its respective classification.
3. City View (13-11, 4) – It’s taken some time to come together, but the Lady Mustangs seem to be finding their stride at the right time.
More: Why he fights: Aldrich's battle with cancer begins with unforgettable City View comeback
4. Windthorst (13-5, 2) – No shame in the loss to Nocona, but we do have to dock the Trojanettes a bit after clearly falling into second place in the 9-2A standings.
5. Harrold (17-2, 6) – There’s no challenge for Harrold in District 16-A. That much is clear after a 95-18 victory against Electra.
6. Throckmorton (21-2, 7) – Throckmorton keeps slugging away in District 21-A, looking the part of a regional tournament contender. The Lady Hounds have a second shot at Newcastle looming.
7. Holliday (13-8, 5) – The Lady Eagles were second in this poll and alone atop the District 7-3A standings less than a week ago. But back-to-back losses to City View and then Vernon has them reeling.
8. Burkburnett (14-7, 8) – The date has arrived. Burkburnett gets its first shot at Sanger and sole possession of the District 7-4A lead Friday.
9. Vernon (14-14, NR) – Hello Lady Lions. You have our attention after upsetting Holliday, 62-56, Tuesday. But there’s still plenty of work to do in order to secure a postseason berth.
10. Electra (17-9, 9) – The Lady Tigers are clinging to the final spot in the rankings, but that’s largely because other contenders like Iowa Park and Jacksboro haven’t been able to hang around, either. Electra is still second in District 16-A, albeit a distant second.
Dropped out – Jacksboro (10).
On the rise – Henrietta.
BOYS TRN TOP 10
1. Benjamin (10-0, 1) – A night off is well deserved for the Mustangs who have torched all comers so far this season.
2. Holliday (22-2, 2) – We didn’t think a team could run the table in the ultra-competitive District 7-3A. Holliday is making us believers, though. But the Eagles’ first district road test is coming, and they do visit City View and Vernon in the coming weeks.
3. Burkburnett (17-7, 3) – Burkburnett’s Big 3 (Ayden White, Robert Ingram and Ozavian Buford) all scored in double figures against Old High on Tuesday. There’s a good chance the Bulldogs are going to win when that happens.
4. Knox City (19-2, 4) – Another team that may be lacking a real challenge in its district, although Roby wants to have a say in that when it gets a rematch with the Greyhounds soon.
5. Hirschi (8-10, 5) – The Huskies are coming off an open date and have only played one game in the past two weeks. That’s good. Their next two opponents – Gainesville and Burkburnett – are going to test the Huskies’ legs.
6. Nocona (15-11, 6) – There’s a lot of attention paid to the Nocona girls team, and for good reason, but the boys are having their own fantastic season. And they started District 9-2A with arguably their top two challengers.
7. Electra (20-3, 7) – Electra has a sneaky matchup with Crowell on Friday, but we’ve still got the Tigers’ rematch with Benjamin circled even if the first meeting was lopsided in the Mustangs’ favor.
8. Bowie (14-12, 9) – There’s a logjam being formed underneath Holliday in District 7-3A, although Bowie could add the Eagles to the pile up if it can upset them Friday.
9. City View (12-9, NR) – City View gets back into the rankings, taking Old High’s spot after the latter dropped consecutive games to open District 7-4A. Meanwhile in 7-3A, the Mustangs are back firmly in the mix following a strong showing against Iowa Park on Tuesday.
10. Vernon (15-7, 10) – Vernon’s fan base can be a vocal one, and we know we’ll get questioned about why we’ve ranked the Lions lower than City View despite them owning a win over the Mustangs. Vernon has also lost two straight to Bowie and Holliday. And City View beat Bowie but is still ranked below the Rabbits. After Holliday, it’s tough to separate the resumes of these three teams. We’ll get some answers to our questions soon, though.
Dropped out – WFHS (8).
FRIDAY’S GAMES TO WATCH
GIRLS
Sanger at Burkburnett – The winner heads into the second half of District 7-4A play with the top spot in the standings.
Vernon at Iowa Park – These two teams are tied with Henrietta for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 7-3A. Iowa Park won the first meeting, 48-46.
Jacksboro at City View – City View’s only District 7-4A loss is to Jacksboro, 50-42, on Dec. 15. But Jacksboro has lost three straight games, while City View has won six straight and ascended to the top of the district standings.
Windthorst at Seymour – These two are currently tied for second with 3-1 records in District 9-2A.
Crowell at Electra – Two more teams tied for second in its respective district, this time 16-A. Electra won the first meeting, 49-47, on Dec. 15.
BOYS
Hirschi at Gainesville – There are three undefeated teams in District 7-4A right now, and this game features two of them. Gainesville has only lost two games this season, but Hirschi has played a much tougher schedule.
Holliday at Bowie – City View and Vernon couldn’t push Holliday. Now it’s Bowie’s turn. This is Holliday’s first big district matchup on the road.
Windthorst at Seymour – Nocona has established itself as the early favorite with wins over both of these teams. But second place appears to be wide open.
Archer City at Petrolia – And don’t discount the Wildcats or Pirates from the second-place discussion. The play of Petrolia’s Ramsey Hensley particularly deserves mention right now. He’s been one of the most productive players in the district.
