Nordstrom Rack plans to open a store in Clovis.
The popular discount version of the high-end department store is in the process of taking over the former Stein Mart store at Clovis and Herndon avenues. It will be in the Clovis Crossing shopping center, which is also home to Home Goods, JoAnn Fabric & Crafts, and Walmart.
The company has submitted plans to the City of Clovis and had several permits approved, confirmed business development manager Shawn Miller. A remodel of the exterior and renovations inside the store should begin soon, he said.
Nordstrom did not return a message seeking comment Wednesday.
Stein Mart closed all its 300 stores – including locations in Fresno and Clovis – after filing for bankruptcy in 2020. (The owner of Pier 1 bought what remained of the retailer has relaunched the brand as an online-only business.)
Fresno has a Nordstrom Rack store in the Villaggio shopping center on North Blackstone Avenue.
The store carries clothing for women, men and children at prices that can be up to 90% what some brands would originally sell for. Nordstrom’s full-fledged stores frequently carry high-end brands, such as dresses that cost hundreds of dollars.
Although some of Nordstrom Rack’s clothes are overstock from those stores, it also carries items from other manufacturers.
Nordstrom Rack also carries shoes, handbags, jewelry and fragrances.
Fresno/Clovis wants a Nordstrom
A regular Nordstrom has long been on the wish list of many shoppers in the Fresno-Clovis area. Last year, The Fresno Bee polled readers on what stores or restaurants they wanted to see come to town.
Nordstrom landed at No. 3 on the list (behind IKEA and Cracker Barrel). At the time, retail broker Mark Saito of Mark Saito Co. said the Fresno area would be a tough sell for such an upscale department store because the area doesn’t have enough disposable income.
Additionally, many department stores are struggling in the current retail environment. The company said last year it was focused on expanding the range of prices at Nordstrom Rack and focusing on its online business, not opening new stores.
Nordstrom has dozens of locations in California, but most are in Southern California or the Bay Area.
Although work will start soon on the Clovis store, it could be many months before the store is ready to open.
