How high can a coyote jump? Backyard video of bold intruder takes Texans by surprise

Screengrab from video shared to Facebook by Constable Chad Norvell.

A solid wooden fence might seem like enough to deter most animals from wandering into the backyard, but a recent video out of Texas has many second guessing that assumption, and maybe looking for a tape measure.

In the video, taken in the back yard of a Pecan Grove home, a coyote is seen sneaking across the grass in broad daylight, then leaping on top of a fence. It balances atop the barrier for a moment before hopping on the roof of a shed.

The fence was 6 feet tall, according to Constable Chad Norvell, who shared the video on Facebook, cautioning residents that their yards may not be as secure as they think.

“Please be aware we live among them and a 6’ fence isn’t an obstacle,” Norvell said in the Sept. 6 post, adding that a pet dog was recently killed by a coyote in the nearby community of Firethorne.

It’s well known that coyotes are stealthy, tenacious and adaptable — one of few larger animals able to survive within ever-growing urban and residential sprawl. But they also, apparently, have a tremendous vertical jump.

“Let’s applaud that coyote’s jumping and balance skills,” a commenter wrote.

“I (was) thinking my shepherd wouldn’t have much problem with one if we see one, I am not so sure after seeing how athletic they are,” wrote another. “(It) looked like that was completely effortless.”

“Find me somebody that can train my dog to move like a coyote,” a comment said.

Coyotes have been seen leaping over fences up to 8 feet high, and can scale barriers even taller using their back legs, outlets report.

Coyotes have a natural fear of humans, so attacks on people are rare, according to experts. Often when there’s a conflict between humans and coyotes, it’s because of a pet.

Attacks on dogs usually occur in the presence of people, or on residential properties associated with people,” according to a study by the University of Nebraska. “Small dogs may be taken at any time of year, but attacks on larger dogs are usually associated with the mating and breeding season (January through April).”
