Hertz set to purchase 100,000 Teslas as rental market goes electric

Rental car company Hertz is set to change the game with their purchase of 100,000 Tesla vehicles.

Hertz’s purchase, which was announced Monday, ties the record for the largest order of electric vehicles ever made. Amazon recently ordered 100,000 electric vans for its delivery fleet from startup manufacturer Rivian in a deal valued at $4.2 billion.

As part of the deal, Hertz will be installing several electric vehicle charging stations at its locations.

The rental car company said that customers would be able to rent Tesla Model 3 vehicles from airports and at neighborhood locations, as well as at certain European locations beginning in November.

“It is just the start for Hertz,” said Hertz interim CEO Mark Fields, to USA Today. “We’re very much now looking to the future.”

While prices have not been revealed, Fields added that other Tesla models would also be available for rent.

Fields also emphasized that customers need not worry about the vehicles running out of battery power.

“We want to make customers feel not anxious about range anxiety and that they can charge their vehicles,” Fields said about the company installing 65 charging stations by the end of 2022 and over 100 by the end of 2023.

NFL legend Tom Brady has also been brought on to help advertise the Hertz electric vehicle push.
