Herschel Walker offers another bizarre hot take on science

The Senate campaign of former football star Herschel Walker produced another head-scratcher Saturday when the Republican from Georgia explained how, in his view, air pollution works.

“We, in America, have some of the cleanest air and cleanest water of anybody in the world,” the 60-year-old conservative told fans at a recent rally from which video is now making the rounds.

That sentence played well with Walker’s audience. Then his lecture on “climate change,” as he sees it, kicked into gear.

“So, what we do is we gonna put from the Green New Deal, millions or billions of dollars cleaning our good air up,” he continued. “So, all of a sudden, China and India ain’t putting nothin’ into their cleaning that situation up.”

A 2021 study by IQAir, which tracks global pollution, ranked India fifth and mainland China 22nd globally in terms of countries with the poorest air quality. The U.S. ranked 90th, between Germany and Denmark in the 117-nation rating. Bangladesh has the worst rating.

“Since we don’t control the air, our good air decides to float over to China’s bad air,” Walker explained. “So, when China gets our good air, their bad air got to move. So, it moves over to our good air space. Then, now, we got to clean that back up.”

The clip is from the Hall County Republican Party Independence Day Picnic, according to reports. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said that Walker, who won the GOP nomination in May, largely limits his campaign stops to private events where media is not often welcomed.

Video from one such event went viral in March when Walker wondered aloud why, if evolution is real, “Why are there still apes?”

The primates from which humans evolved no longer exist. The great apes that populate the planet today will not evolve into humans during their lifetime.

Walker’s campaign has been rife with odd revelations. He has at times claimed to have graduated in the upper 1% of his University of Georgia class when, in fact, he didn’t graduate at all. The former running back also reportedly claimed to have been the valedictorian at a high school that doesn’t recognize valedictorians. Walker has said he was formerly in law enforcement, which included a stint with the FBI, though there’s no evidence that’s true.

Real Clear Politics shows Walker’s Democratic opponent Raphael Warnock holding a 1.6% lead in their tight Senate race.
