A teenage boy in Maryland leaped into a frozen creek to save his friend, and police rushed to his aid, officials said.

Officers were dispatched to an ice-covered creek in Anne Arundel County, which encompasses Annapolis, on Dec. 26 after a report of two teenagers in distress, according to a police news release.

One of the teens had fallen into the frozen water, and the other jumped in a brave attempt to save his friend, police said.

When police arrived, the teen who fell in had safely reached the shore, and the other was submerged in the icy water near a wooden dock, police said. The air temperature was near freezing.

After tossing the child a rope, an officer shouted to other responders, “Help me pull him up!” body camera footage shows.

Several officers then hoisted the teen, who had a life jacket strapped on over his soaked clothes, onto the dock, the video shows.

The child, who had made “a heroic attempt to rescue his friend,” was taken to an ambulance after the ordeal.

The identities of the teenagers were not revealed.

A spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.
