Hero Capitol Police cop killed by blow to the head with a fire extinguisher during Trump-inspired riot

Officer Brian Sicknick, mortally wounded by a fire extinguisher to the head while defending the U.S. Capitol from rioters, was a true American patriot: An Iraq War veteran, unafraid to question his country’s leaders.

Sicknick, a 42-year-old New Jersey native, died around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, one day after he was attacked by rioters who invaded the Capitol following an incendiary speech by President Trump to an amped-up crowd near the White House. His family said Sicknick had long hoped to land a job in law enforcement, and the veteran cop was fatally targeted while on the job that he loved.

Flags in D.C. flew at half-staff Friday to honor Sicknick, who joined the Capitol Police in 2008. No arrests were yet made in the killing of the veteran law enforcer fatally injured in the violent melee with lawless rioters, although federal officials promised a full investigation.

In Sicknick’s hometown of South River, N.J., the flags were also flying at half-staff to honor the local hero. His family released a statement paying homage to the youngest of their four boys two days after he was attacked.

“Many details regarding Wednesday’s events and the direct causes of Brian’s injuries remain unknown, and our family asks the public and the press to respect our wishes in not making Brian’s passing a political issue,” the family said.

“Brian was a hero and that is what we would like people to remember.”

According to CNN, Vice President Mike Pence made a Friday afternoon condolence call to the Sicknick family. The president opted instead to deliver a Twitter message to the Americans who voted for his losing campaign.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen released a statement vowing to track down the officer’s killers with all the means at his disposal.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and fellow officers of U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick,” said Rosen. “The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department will jointly investigate the case, and the Department of Justice will spare no resources in investigating and holding accountable those responsible.”

Sicknick, a former Air National Guardsman, served in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Enduring Freedom before joining the D.C. police force. The veteran officer collapsed Wednesday after returning to his police division office and never recovered.

“The sacrifice of Officer Sicknick reminds us of our obligation to those we serve: to protect our country from all threats foreign and domestic,” said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. “May it be a comfort to Officer Sicknick’s family that so many mourn with and pray for them at this sad time.”

Back in 2004, Sicknick penned a letter to his local New Jersey newspaper about the White House race between incumbent President George W. Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry.

“Bush’s foreign policies are one reason the world has become as dangerous as it is,” wrote Sicknick. “I don’t know why everyone is brainwashed that only Bush can protect us.”

An earlier letter to the editor found Sicknick, skeptical about diplomatic efforts, urging the United States to take a stronger stance against Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein.

The first letter included two lines that rang particularly true in recent days as Trump refused to acknowledge his November defeat by Democrat Joe Biden.

“I implore everyone to vote their conscience in the upcoming presidential election,” wrote Sicknick. “No more rewarding incompetent politicians with a second term.”

Sicknick, who grew up in the Central Jersey town of 16,000, was a graduate of the Middlesex County Vocational Technical High School in neighboring East Brunswick, N.J. He joined the New Jersey Air National Guard after graduating in 1997.

Sicknick deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1999, and served in Kyrgyzstan after the 9/11 terrorist attack as part of Operation Enduring Freedom during the Iraq war. He was honorably discharged in 2003, said Lt. Col. Barbara Brown, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey National Guard.

“Staff Sgt. Sicknick’s commitment to service and protect his community, state, and nation will never be forgotten,” said Brown.

He was living in Springfield, Va., at the time of his killing.

His death brought the number of fatalities in the riot to to five, including one protester who was fatally shot by Capitol Police and three other pro-Trump civilians who died during the rampage.
