Here's what's open and closed in the Rockford and Freeport areas on Memorial Day

Monday is Memorial Day, and while most government offices and schools will be closed, most gas stations and grocery stores will be open along with lots of big-box retailers and small, locally-owned businesses.

And if you don't want to cook out, you don't have to. Lots of restaurants will be open, too.

Retail chains

Walmart is touting a "Huge Memorial Day Rollback Sale." Target is promoting sales throughout the store of up to 50% off, and Best Buy has deals on TVs, computers, phones, tablets, appliances and many other items. Lowe's, Home Depot and Menards also are open, but hours may vary.

Grocery stores

Schnucks, Walmart, and Woodmans will be open with normal business hours. Cub Foods in Freeport also will be open.

Pharmacies

CVS pharmacies are open. The CVS inside the Charles Street Schnuck's store in Rockford will have limited hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walgreens will be closed.

Financial institutions

Most financial institutions, banks and credit unions will be closed Monday.

Garbage collection

Rock River Disposal will not pick up garbage on Memorial Day. All routes scheduled from May 27 through May 31 will be delayed by one day.

Gill's Freeport Disposal also will not pick up garbage on Memorial Day. All routes that week will be delayed by one day.

Government offices

State, federal and local government offices are closed Monday. Rockford’s City Council will have its regular weekly meeting on Tuesday, May 28. City Hall in Freeport also is closed on Monday.

Libraries

Libraries in Rockford, Belvidere and Freeport will be closed Monday and reopen Tuesday, May 28.

Mail delivery

U.S. Postal Service, FedEX and UPS will not deliver on Monday.

Morning brew

Rockford area Dunkin and Starbucks will be open. Meg's Daily Grind will be open with limited hours from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Public Transportation

Rockford Mass Transit District buses will not operate on Monday.

Schools

Public and private schools are closed Monday.

Theme parks

Six Flags Hurricane Harbor is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
