Here's what's happening in central Ohio this weekend

Two events at Columbus College of Art & Design will usher in the weekend, with a fashion show featuring diverse styles by student designers taking place on Thursday and a community event that will showcase art, film, poetry and more — plus there will be food trucks and interactive games!

Another student-oriented event, "Schooled on Poetry," will feature works by high schoolers from five area schools, along with several noted poets including Columbus' own Hanif Abdurraqib and Cynthia Amoah

Also, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra will cap off its 2023-24 season by bringing Music Director David Danzmayr and creative partner-violinist Vadim Gluzman together onstage for concerts on Saturday and Sunday.

Fashion show to turn KEMBA Live! into runway

Get ready for an evening of styles from couture to evening wear to streetwear by 12 up-and-coming designers from Columbus College of Art & Design's class of 2024 as they premiere their senior collections.

The CCAD fashion show brings these designs to the runway at 8 p.m. Thursday at KEMBA Live!, 405 Neil Ave. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Breakout talents include valedictorian and Fashion Week Columbus scholarship recipient Dominic Ciucci, whose collection, Urchin, works to elevate the perception of denim; and Chawis Saelim, a Thailand native whose designs for his collection, The Dark Side of the Moon, is inspired by Japanese art and culture.

Chroma to showcase best art and design of CCAD

Columbus College of Art & Design is to open its doors to the public to see outstanding art and design work from students across various academic programs at Chroma: Best of CCAD, an annual campuswide community event.

The free, family-friendly event is to take place from 4-8 p.m. Friday on CCAD's campus at 60 Cleveland Ave., with food trucks and activities, including film and video screenings, art-gallery openings, interactive games, poetry readings and a photo booth.

Among the highlights at Chroma will be animation senior Meera Ralhan's "Nani's Kitchen," a heartwarming animated film exploring the connections and conflicts between generations when it comes to cultural traditions in the kitchen. D.L. Hughley to bring sharp-witted stand-up to Funny Bone

Known for being astute, topical and politically savvy while bringing the laughs, comedian, actor, author and radio personality D.L. Hughley is to appear at the Columbus Funny Bone, 145 Easton Town Center, this weekend.

Hughley, whose 11th stand-up special “D.L. Hughley: Contrarian” is now streaming on Netflix, hosted BET's "Comic View," late-night talk shows on CNN and Comedy Central and can currently be heard on his nationally syndicated afternoon radio program, "The D.L. Hughley Show."

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday (doors open 6 p.m.); 10 p.m. Friday (doors 8:30 p.m.); 7 p.m. Saturday (doors 5:30 p.m.); 9:45 p.m. Saturday (doors 9:15 p.m.); and 7 p.m. Sunday (doors 6 p.m.). Deidre McCalla, Joe Jencks to span range of folk music

Presented by Six String Concerts, Deidre McCalla and Joe Jencks are to perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center, 777 Evening St., Worthington. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

McCalla, whose songs convey hope and celebration, struggle, loss and longing, has shared the stage with many well-known performers, including Suzanne Vega, Tracy Chapman and Sweet Honey in the Rock. Her 2022 release, "Endless Grace," dominated the folk charts, as did its single, "Shoulder to the Wheel."

Jencks blends his Irish roots and working-class upbringing with conservatory training to deliver musical narratives full of heart, soul and grit. He released his 17th recording, "The Coming of the Years" in 2022 to positive reviews. Tickets are $28 for adults and $5 for children 17 and younger. (sixstring.org)

Spoken-word performances to feature local student poets

Columbus-area students join noted poets from around the country for "Schooled on Poetry" at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St. A collaboration between CAPA, Thurber House, ESCCO, the Poetry Foundation, the Columbus Foundation and poet-educator Peter Kahn, the poetry reading is the culmination of a yearlong poetry project at Dublin Scioto, Grandview Heights, Independence, KIPP and Northland high schools.

The event is to feature intraschool group pieces and individual original poems by slam champs from each school. They are to be joined by local poets Hanif Abdurraqib and Cynthia Amoah, Chicago poet-musical artist Christian "Rich Robbins" Robinson and National Book Award finalist Tim Seibles from Virginia.

Magpies to sing diverse musical medley at two concerts

The Magpie Consort, a Columbus group of 16 singers directed by Sheena Phillips, is to give concerts at 7 p.m. Saturday at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 7 W. Henderson Road, and 3 p.m. Sunday at King Avenue United Methodist Church, 299 King Ave.

The program, "One for Sorrow, Two for Joy," is to include choral classics, vocal jazz, traditional songs from the Americas, the British Isles, India and South Africa and two pieces by Phillips. Guests include pianist Phil Brown Dupont, whom the Magpies have worked with for many years, violinist Jessa Ehle and numerous former Magpies who are returning for the performances.

Danzmayr, Gluzman to be in spotlight at ProMusica season ender

ProMusica Chamber Orchestra Music Director David Danzmayr and creative partner-violinist Vadim Gluzman reunite on stage for ProMusica's season finale at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St.

The program opens with Valentin Silvestrov’s "Hymne - 2001," followed by Gluzman playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, one of the most celebrated works of the violin repertoire. Danzmayr is to close the concerts as conductor on Brahms’ "Symphony No. 2."

Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra to offer free concert

Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, which has brought free classical music to the community since its founding in 1979, is to perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1479 Morse Road.

The program is to feature Schubert's "Overture to Rosamunde," Dvorak's "Czech Suite" and Brahms' "Symphony No. 2."

The orchestra has been conducted by music director Luis Biava for 23 years. Biava also serves as music director and conductor of the New Albany Symphony Orchestra and the principal cellist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and is a frequent soloist with numerous orchestras. Musician Stephane Wrembel, known for his mastery of jazz guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt's style, is to perform with his band at 6 and 8:15 p.m. May 15 at Ginger Rabbit, 17 Buttles Ave.

Wrembel's composition, "Bistro Fada," was the theme for Woody Allen's 2011 film "Midnight in Paris," which won the Grammy Award for best compilation soundtrack. His song "Big Brother" appeared on the soundtrack for another Allen film, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

Award-winning folk duo to play at Natalie’s Grandview

Husband-wife folk twosome Ordinary Elephant, made up of Pete and Crystal Damore, appear on Charlie's Stage at Natalie's Grandview, 945 King Ave., at 8:30 p.m. May 15. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Touring in support of their self-titled album released May 3, Ordinary Elephant began in 2014, when the Damores left established careers to hit the road in an RV and pursue their passion for music. The pair earned the International Folk Music Award for artist of the year in 2017.
