Memorial Day weekend serves as the unofficial start of the summer pool season.

Three Stark County pubic facilities are set to open this weekend. There were previously four public pools in the county, but the Sandy Valley Community Pool has closed.

Here's what swimmers can expect from the remaining three pools as opening time approaches.

Minerva Municipal Swimming Pool

The Minerva Municipal Swimming Pool, 508 E. Lincoln Way, will open Saturday and close Labor Day.

Minerva Service Director James Williams said although day pass rates have increased to $10, season passes are currently on sale until the pool opens.

"We have certified lifeguards," Williams said. "Two are on deck, three if there are over 150 people in the pool."

Williams said starting the week of May 28, there will be senior swim sessions weekday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to noon with a $1 admission cost. There will not be an exercise program as in previous years.

The pool is available for private rental Wednesdays and Sundays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a maximum of 75 people and a fee of $250.

North Canton Dogwood Pool

Dogwood Pool, 365 Seventh St. NE, will be opening on time for Memorial Day weekend this year after issues with the pool liner delayed its opening last summer.

North Canton YMCA Executive Director Ben Wheeler said pool season will last until Sept. 2 with occasional breaks. Wheeler said the pool was renovated in the offseason, including all-new bathroom fixtures, new flooring and ceilings, a new roof, reworked lighting and updated changing rooms.

"The pool's in great condition," Wheeler said. "We're ready for Memorial Day weekend."

Wheeler said while a date-specific schedule for pool events and programs is still in the works, families can look forward to many activities. Events include competitions, giveaways, a splash pad, inflatable slides, DJs and Kona Ice trucks to offer frozen treats.

"The pool is city-owned and YMCA-operated," Wheeler said. "It's a great opportunity for the community."

Weekends and holidays have limited admission exclusively for season pass holders. However, Wheeler said, season pass holders can bring guests.

Prices for season passes for North Canton residents and nonresidents. Season pass prices are lower for residents and are on sale until the pool season begins. Wheeler said day passes will also be available for $16 per person.

North Canton Dogwood Pool's website states the outdoor temperature needs to be at least 70 degrees for the pool to open. Weather closings will be listed on the pool's Facebook page.

The Robertson Community Center, 1005 E. State St., formally opens Saturday through to Sept. 2.

RCC receptionist Beth Miles said the pool will have more limited hours starting Aug. 5 due to lifeguard staffing shortages.

"Our lifeguards will be going back to school in August," Miles said. "But before Aug. 5, it will be open from noon to 7:00 p.m."

Miles said the pool will be open seven days a week weather permitting and will close if the outdoor temperature is below 70 degrees.

The pool has a $7 per-person daily entry fee for both swimmers and non-swimmers. Activities at and near the pool in the RCC include basketball and volleyball courts, as well as a spray park for young children, according to this year's flyer.

Miles said there will be no swimming lessons this year due to a lifeguard shortage. But the water aerobics program remains.
