Does Pumpkin Pie Need To Be Refrigerated?Ethan Calabrese

It's officially pumpkin season, which means it's the perfect time to enjoy all things pumpkin like pumpkin whoopie pies, pumpkin ice cream, and pumpkin bread. And, of course, Thanksgiving isn't Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie.

But, with all the cooking and eating going on, you want to make sure you're adhering to food-safety guidelines to ensure a healthy holiday. While you may be most concerned about cooking your turkey to the right temperature or safely eating leftovers, you shouldn't forget about your desserts.

So, should pumpkin pie be refrigerated? The short answer is yes.

The USDA recommends refrigerating custard pies (which includes pumpkin pie), according to Meredith Carothers, food safety expert with the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Pumpkin pies can keep in the refrigerator for three to four days. Many store-bought pies include instructions for storage and reheating.

A spokesperson from the FDA recommends following the manufacturer's storage instructions. "When in doubt, consumers should refrigerate the items and consume within a few days," according to the FDA spokesperson.
