Here's what we know as investigation continues into Route 80 Hackensack crash

Multiple questions remain unanswered as police continue to investigate the horrific crash on Route 80 in Hackensack that left two dead and several others injured late Tuesday night.

Here is everything we know so far and the questions that we are still looking to answer about the crash.

What caused the crash?

According to a preliminary investigation that was released Wednesday morning, a Toyota SUV traveling eastbound on the local lanes struck the curbed median near milepost 66.6 and veered into the express lanes where it collided with a Volvo tractor-trailer.

The Volvo then entered the westbound lanes where it collided with an Isuzu box truck causing it to enter the westbound local lanes and burst into flames. A second vehicle, a GMC SUV also collided with the Volvo, according to state police.

As of Friday morning, the question of what caused the crash and the Toyota to hit the median in the first place could not be answered by state police who said that the crash remains under ongoing investigation.

Who are the victims?

On Wednesday, state police confirmed that both the driver and the passenger of the box truck died in the crash.

As of Friday morning, state police could not release their identities as the crash remains under investigation.

Who are the injured and what is their condition?

The driver of the Volvo is a 63-year-old man from Temple, Texas and his passenger is a 60-year-old man from Killeen, Texas. They were both seriously injured and taken to a local hospital.

As of Friday morning, per state police, both men were in stable condition. Their identities have not been released.

The driver and passenger of the GMC SUV, whose identities are also unknown at this time, suffered minor injuries in the crash.
