The new adaptation of James Clavell's bestselling novel Shōgun is here, and it's a wondrous feat of storytelling. The novel, which was first adapted for television in 1980, is based on the real history of the Sengouku period (the show takes place in 1600). The latest iteration, co-created by husband and wife duo Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis.
Shōgun "was a big chance to introduce our culture to the world and we try to make [it] authentic as much as possible," Hiroyuki Sanada, the show's star and producer, tells T&C. "That's a very important thing for us. Luckily, we could hire a Japanese crew who has the experience to make a historical drama, all experts on set for each department: wig, costume, props, everything."
Watching the show, Sanada adds, "I hope people can feel our teamwork—East meets West collaboration." He adds, "It's a hard time in the world now, but it's a good model case: different culture, different language, religious, working together, sharing everything, learning each other, respect each other and then working to the same goal, right? I hope people feel those kind of things, especially for now."
Co-creator Rachel Kondo says, "I really hope viewers will, at the very least, sense the care and the consideration and the effort that went into this production. We worked incredibly hard to try to communicate a deep, deep respect for: 'What is the authentic choice and how do we get there?' We're asking a lot of viewers, and so I hope that they will bring a degree of openness to it, and interest in it."
Kondo should not be worried: The series is a thrilling, engaging, and epic period drama that brings Clavell's novel alive. Here's a guide to when new episodes of Shōgun are released (FX originals streaming on Hulu typically arrive on the streaming platform by 12:01 eastern):
