Herald-Mail Student of the Week: See this week's poll

The nominations for The Herald-Mail Student of the Week are in, and you can now vote for the week's top student on our website.

Voting is open on our website until noon on Thursday, May 30.

We will announce the winner at heraldmailmedia.com on Friday, May 31, and in the print edition on Sunday, June 2.

Local school administrators nominated students who have shown outstanding academic and school achievement, and provided the details on their accomplishments below.

This is the last Student of the Week poll for the 2023-2024 school year. The polls will resume after the start of the new school year.

And the nominees for The Herald-Mail Student of the Week are ...

Kya Carmichael, North Hagerstown High School: Kya, a junior, is in the AVID college-readiness program. She is a perfect example of hard work paying off. Kya has taken upper-level classes at North High and worked very hard in all of them, demonstrating academic excellence. In her International Baccalaureate (IB) environmental class she demonstrated a deep and thorough understanding of environmental issues and critical-thinking skills regarding complicated societal issues of environmental importance. Kya is always willing to help out when needed, demonstrating the IB learner profile of caring. In her classes, Kya actively seeks feedback. She always strives to improve in her work and to better herself.

Addison Drier, Global Vision Christian School Broadfording: Addison, a sophomore, is known for having a servant's heart. Addison is characterized by friendliness. She makes other students around her feel at home.   She also is involved in community service, primarily through her local church. Addison is an honor roll student. She participated in varsity girls basketball and is involved in many activities at school.

Paige Updegraff, Smithsburg High School: Paige, a senior, is a student in Smithsburg High's Allied Health Program. She will graduate this year with her Certified Nursing Assistant and Geriatric Nursing Assistant Certification along with her high school diploma. While at Smithsburg, Paige has been a member of the Smithsburg Academic Leadership Team and National Honor Society. She also is a member of the varsity volleyball team. Paige is a wonderful student and role model. She consistently demonstrates high academic achievement while being compassionate and caring toward her peers. Paige plans to continue her nursing degree at Shepherd University in the fall.

Kaydence "Kayde" Gaither, Hancock Middle Senior High School: Kayde, a sophomore, is a hard worker who has maintained an impressive GPA while enrolled in honors-level courses. These tremendous academics have earned her a spot in the Boyd J. Michael III Technical High School next school year as well as in the National Honor Society. Kayde is a shining example of service and leadership. She dedicates numerous hours to community service through the Interact Club, always eager to lend a helping hand wherever needed. Kayde's passion for sports, including volleyball, basketball and softball, showcases her leadership qualities and her commitment to teamwork. She also contributes to the school community through her involvement in the yearbook as an active editor.

Emily Shoemaker, Clear Spring High School: Emily, a senior, took honors and dual enrollment courses, earning college credit prior to graduation. Emily is a member of the school's orchestra and FFA chapter. She also is an athlete, participating in cheer during the fall as well as indoor track and softball. Emily is an integral part of the Drama Club, participating in the winter and spring productions. Emily is a hard-worker and was committed to the success of everything she participated in at Clear Spring High. We are proud of Emily and look forward to her continued success.

Juliette Bragunier, Williamsport High School: Juliette, a senior, consistently challenges herself academically by taking honors and dual-enrollment courses. She is an active and engaged member of the Williamsport High community, including with the student government, the National Honor Society, and the honor societies for science, math and French. Juliette excels academically and on the field as a member of the varsity softball team.

Cynnae Lubin, South Hagerstown High School: Cynnae, a freshman, goes out of her way to be kind to others. She works hard and gets good grades. Cynnae also made all-county orchestra playing the violin.

Meghan Mullins, Boyd J. Michael III Technical High School: Meghan, a junior, is always kind, joyful and respectful. She just finished her National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core and Level 1 Carpentry certification as part of the construction and building trade program. Meghan also earned her 10-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification. She was the SkillsUSA regional champion in job skill demonstration. Meghan is No. 2 in the Hagerstown Gators YMCA swimming team and has achieved four team records in freestyle by practicing more than 10 hours a week. She enjoys volunteering, helping young swimmers learn the passion of her sport.
