Herald-Mail Student of the Week: See this week's poll

The nominations for The Herald-Mail Student of the Week are in, and you can now vote for the week's top student on our website.

Voting is open on our website until noon on Thursday, March 7.

We will announce the winner at heraldmailmedia.com on Friday, March 8, and in the print edition on Sunday, March 10.

Local school administrators nominated students who have shown outstanding academic and school achievement, and provided the details on their accomplishments below.

And the nominees for The Herald-Mail Student of the Week are ...

Waylon Leach, Boyd J. Michael III Technical High School: Waylon, a senior, rarely misses school, does very well in his electrical area, and is an active athlete in indoor track for his local high school and area. Waylon gets his work done and keeps to himself. There is never any drama around Waylon. He is very focused.

Oliver Beverungen, Boonsboro High School: Oliver, a freshman, is a Carson Scholar nominee. He is enrolled in dual college credit courses. Oliver is in All-County Band and is a member of Boonsboro High's tennis team.

Madison "Maddie" Henson, Smithsburg High School: Maddie, a junior, is a wonderful student and a hard worker. She asks questions whenever she has them and never hesitates to help her peers. Maddie is in the AVID college-readiness program. She is a member of the Good Human Club, which focuses on good deeds and providing opportunities to promote kindness amongst the school community. She also is a member of the Best Buddies Club, which partners student volunteers with Connections/Life Skills students to engage in activities during and outside the school day.

Ireland South, Clear Spring High School: Ireland, a sophomore, is a stand-out music student. She participates in concert band, marching band, jazz band, and earned third-chair trumpet in both All-County Band and Orchestra this year. She also takes private trumpet lessons, during which she has been working on her solo and ensemble pieces. Ireland successfully juggles band with a full schedule of honors and Advanced Placement courses.

Aiden Hottinger, Hancock Middle Senior High School: Aiden, a freshman, consistently exhibits an exceptional level of academic achievement, reflecting his dedication to learning and his pursuit of excellence. He is polite and respectful, consistently demonstrating kindness and consideration towards teachers and peers. Aiden's willingness to help fellow students who may be facing challenges showcases his compassionate and supportive nature. Despite already producing outstanding work, he continually seeks out ways to enhance his skills and knowledge. His boundless motivation serves as an inspiration to those around him, encouraging others to strive for their personal best.

Jessica Ramos, South Hagerstown High School: Jessica, a freshman, exhibits curiosity, persistence, a quest for intellectual growth, diligence and a zest for learning. She also is a good role model. All of these attributes describe Jessica, an ideal student.

Hailey Boley, Global Vision Christian School Broadfording: Hailey, a freshman, is an honor roll student. She served this year as a student aide to one of our middle school teachers.  At school, Hailey shows a servant's heart in whatever she does. She is friendly, kind and helpful in dealing with other students and staff members.

Cameron Billman, Williamsport High School: Cameron, a senior, has been a role model student throughout his four years at Williamsport High. Cameron joined the cross country team this fall and recently participated in the school's poetry slam. He is currently enrolled in dual credit courses, enabling him to earn both high school and college credits. His outside interests include stocks and trading.

Erin Downey, St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School: Erin, a junior, is a hard-working student who has taken AP courses throughout high school, has a GPA of 4.17 and has consistently been on the distinguished honor roll. Erin is a part of Goretti’s National Honor Society Leadership Team; is the executive secretary and treasurer for the Student Government Association; and has completed over 300 hours of community service. She plays volleyball and softball. Erin recently portrayed Ariel in "The Little Mermaid." She is a member of Goretti's honor society for drama, the Thespian Troupe. She also cantors at Mass and has been a choir member since her freshman year. Erin has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten. She has taken guitar lessons for six years.

Lauren Stine, North Hagerstown High School: Lauren, a junior, is an International Baccalaureate diploma student who competes in track and field, and cross country. She is an individual state champion in the 3,200-meter run in both indoor and outdoor track. Lauren is an officer in the Key Club and a member of the Hub Heroes team for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Student Visionaries of the Year program. She has demonstrated high academic achievement while engaging in extremely rigorous course work.

Alyssa Aikens, Grace Academy: Alyssa, a senior, approaches challenges head-on and springs into action without hesitation. No task is too daunting for her. In addition to her academic achievements, Alyssa has put in a lot of extra time volunteering and mentoring young students at Grace. She has been a part of the student government and is a positive school leader. Alyssa has been accepted to attend her dream university in the fall, and we are excited to see all that God has planned for her life.
