Herald-Mail Student of the Week: See this week's nominations and vote

The nominations for The Herald-Mail Student of the Week are in, and you can now vote for the week's top student on our website.

Voting is open until noon on Thursday, Feb 1.

We will announce the winner at heraldmailmedia.com on Friday, Feb. 2, and in the print edition on Sunday, Feb. 4.

Local school administrators nominated students who have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and provide the details on their accomplishments below.

And the nominees for the Herald-Mail Student of the Week are …

Ana Small Simmons, South Hagerstown High School: Ana is a leader within her school and community, both as a student and as an athlete. She is involved in South High's volleyball, and indoor and outdoor track teams. Ana also is involved with the school's Black Student Union, Student Athletic Leadership Council, Student Government and Academic Leadership Academy.

Brody Stratton, Hancock Middle Senior High School: Brody, a junior, is a hardworking and motivated student who exemplifies the qualities school officials value in Hancock's student body. His determination serves as an inspiration to his peers. Brody's passion for sports is complemented by his commitment to academic excellence, as he fearlessly takes on advanced classes. He is on Hancock's football team, indoor track, and outdoor track in the spring. Brody has 131 service hours. He is vice president of the school's Interact Club, which is Rotary International's service club for youths.

Autumn Slick, Williamsport High School: Autumn, a senior, is dual-enrolled taking both courses at Williamsport High and at Hagerstown Community College. Autumn has maintained excellent grades in addition to working part-time. She is an excellent role model and a good friend.  You can see Autumn cheering her friends and fellow Wildcats on at sporting events.

Abigail "Abby" Smith, Boonsboro High School: Abby, a junior, volunteers at the Martinsburg (W.Va.) VA Medical Center. She helped lead Boonsboro High's We the People team, on the impact of the Bill of Rights, to a state championship recently. Abby has had lead roles in several school productions. She was elected president of the Class of 2025 each year she's been at Boonsboro High. Abby is on the varsity track and field team. She is a member of multiple honor societies, including the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Rho Kappa for social studies.

Samantha "Sam" Rowe, Smithsburg High School: Sam Rowe, a sophomore, is a fantastic student. She works hard in class and dedicates time to doing well.  She cares about learning and strives to earn good grades. Sam will take the time to correct assignments and resubmit them if she struggled on it the first time.  She is a quiet student and is kind and respectful.

Aniela Banz, Clear Spring High School: Aniela, a senior, is enrolled in a variety of classes, from dual enrollment to agriculture and Honors Choir. She does all this while juggling a job. Aniela was invited to be a part of the Maryland All-State Chorus this spring.  She will be the first choral student to represent Clear Spring High since 2015.

Danica Bennett, St. Maria Goretti High School: Danica, a junior, has a 4.0 unweighted GPA and 4.22 weighted GPA. She has been on the distinguished honor roll every semester. Last year, Danica's National History Day project on the first female congresswoman made it to the state finals and received the "Excellence in Government" award. She is a National Honor Society Officer, and a representative for student government. This past December, Danica coordinated the Yuda Bands Fundraiser for the NHS to collect money toward a student's education in a third-world country. The effort raised $850. Danica also gives back to her community, giving 115 hours of her time to service.

Dana Jimenez, Boyd. J. Michael III Technical High School: Diana is working on her architectural internship and has finished her apprenticeship hours. She is a great designer and a SkillsUSA state champion. Dana brings her hard work, leadership and determination into my classroom to help everyone.
