Herald food podcast: What’s better, winning ‘Top Chef’ or getting a Michelin star?

Miami’s first and only “Top Chef” winner, Jeremy Ford, has a Hollywood vibe but couldn’t be more down to earth.

Before he won the Bravo TV cooking competition, got his own TV show alongside celebrities, “Fast Foodies,” or was appearing regularly on the Today show, he was growing his own vegetables at home after his mother was diagnosed with diabetes. Ford built a greenhouse at his former Davie home with more than 50 varieties of fruits and vegetables, and it has deeply influenced his cuisine.

Cooking and “eating clean” became part of his life, especially after his mother, who was adopted, found her biological family and Ford learned he had an Italian grandmother — who taught him how to cook Italian food at 14.

We’ll talk to him about that, his first Michelin star at his South Beach restaurant Stubborn Seed, his new Coral Gables spot, and more on this week’s episode of La Ventanita, the Miami Herald food podcast.

Plus, we’ll discuss:

  • The pizza pop-ups that became permanent and made Miami a pizza town

  • An update on “La Planchita,” my blinged-out sandwich press (with photos!)

  • Amy’s claims that she has Miami’s best avocados

Tune in Thursdays at 11 a.m. to watch La Ventanita live on YouTube and the Miami Herald website. Find every episode of La Ventanita podcast at the show page and on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Megaphone, Stitcher and MiamiHerald.com.
