Hendersonville tulip photo contest begins; find out dates and how to enter

The 22nd annual Tulip Extravaganza, a photo contest in downtown Hendersonville, has started and will run through April 30.

The contest, which began in 2002, is the brainchild of Barbara Hughes, who is the longtime owner of Narnia Studios. In a news release, Hughes announced this year's contest will run through April 30. The deadline to enter is April 25.

"Spring is indeed a delightful time, and the Tulip Extravaganza in downtown Hendersonville adds a burst of color to the season," Hughes said in the release. "The tulips, encouraged by a warm spell, have decided to make an early appearance this year, with some already popping up."

Businesses along Main Street are joining in the celebration with tulip-themed displays in their storefront windows. They are also offering spring specials, Hughes said.

"Residents can showcase their photography skills by entering the tulip photo contest at Narnia Studios. To participate, submit your best tulip photos taken in downtown Hendersonville," Hughes said.

With the arrival of spring, the planters along Main Street will bloom with up to 10,000 tulips, Hughes said.

"These vibrant flowers create a picturesque scene, thanks to the efforts of master gardeners Scott Johnson and Bruce Lowe, who meticulously landscape the planters," she said.

The winner will be announced on April 30 and will receive a garden-themed basket. For more information, call Narnia Studios at 828-697-6393 or visit the store at 408 N. Main St.

Last year's winning entry was by Deb Anderson of Laurel Park with her photo called "Night Bloomers," a shot of multiple, colorful Dutch tulips in the glow of streetlights with the illuminated courthouse dome in the background.

"The judges had their pick of dozens of great images but felt this photograph was unique because it was a night shot in downtown Hendersonville," said Hughes in the 2023 Times-News article.
