Helldivers 2 has announced a major change following a heated backlash, with Sony backpedalling on its impending PlayStation Network login requirement.

PC gamers review-bombed the online shooter's Steam page after it was announced that it would soon be a requirement to sign into a PSN account to play. It was explained that the new requirement was always planned but was delayed due to technical issues, and the game's creative director apologised for how it played out.

Things got even worse over the weekend when the game was removed from sale in the 177 countries where PlayStation Network isn't available, but now Sony has announced that logging into PSN will remain optional.

A post on PlayStation's official social media read: "Helldivers fans — we've heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.

"We're still learning what is best for PC players, and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2, and we'll keep you updated on future plans."

On Saturday, there had been almost 69,000 negative reviews on the game's Steam page. At the time of writing, that number has increased to 218,871 negative reviews.

It should be noted that the PSN account linking would not have required PC players to be subscribed to PS Plus, which is mandatory for playing most PS4 and PS5 games online.

Helldivers 2 is out now on PlayStation 5 and PC, and you can check out the best deals for it here.
