Heartstopper star Kit Connor has suggested that his coming out tweet was "a bit rash", before revealing the support he received from his co-stars the next day.

The British actor, best known for playing teenager Nick Nelson in the hit Netflix series, announced in November 2022: "I'm bi. Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show."

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Connor revealed he regretted the way in which he chose to address the online speculation regarding his sexuality.

"It was a human instinctual reaction," he said. "I did it, turned off my light and went to sleep."

His announcement saw his Heartstopper castmates poke fun at him, which he says was the perfect reaction for him "because it took the sting out of it all".

"I knew that I was a queer man, but I didn't feel I wanted the world to know," Connor went on to reflect. "Not because I was ashamed, but because it was private.

"The whole point of the show is that [queerness] is not always so stereotyped. There are so many lines in the show where someone goes: 'Nick Nelson, he's the straightest guy in the school. He's the captain of the rugby team so there's no way [he's queer].' Sometimes you just need to give people space."

In light of his announcement, Heartstopper author Alice Oseman criticised those who had pushed for Connor to reveal his sexuality.

"I truly don't understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes," she wrote. "I hope all those people are embarrassed as f***."

Following its first season with its tale of teen LGBTQ+ love, and the many forms that may take, Heartstopper season two is coming our way. Centring on couple Nick and Charlie, their love story has already proven one for the ages, with Netflix praised for the importance of showing their romance on screen.

Heartstopper season 2 premieres August 3 on Netflix.
