Heart of Stone director Tom Harper has addressed the added relevance of the upcoming Netflix movie.

The film revolves around intelligence agent Rachel Stone (Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot) racing across the globe to protect The Heart, a powerful artificial intelligence that could fall into dangerous hands.

While Heart of Stone's take on artificial intelligence is quite extreme, the themes go directly to the heart of the current actors' and writers' strikes in Hollywood.

At the centre of the strike is a debate over safeguarding measures for AI, where actors and writers would have guarantees their work and likenesses would be protected against unauthorised use.

When Digital Spy chatted with Heart of Stone director Tom Harper — known for his TV work on Peaky Blinders and the BBC's War & Peace — he explained that the parallels weren't intentional.

"It's very interesting, even in the time that we've been developing the movie, even three years ago when we started working on it, it wasn't the same hot topic of conversation as it is now," the filmmaker told us.

"ChatGPT came out and suddenly reignited a conversation that's been going on, but now it feels particularly kind of relevant. That's what's great about movies: They can be entertaining and thrilling and take you in this great journey, but actually, they touch about wider concerns we have as a society."

Not only is the film unexpectedly prescient, but star Gal Gadot has also called Heart of Stone an "a-ha moment" in terms of appealing to a wide range of viewers.

The star-studded spy movie also features Fifty Shades of Grey's Jamie Dornan, Hindi film star Alia Bhatt and Doctor Who's Sophie Okonedo.

Heart of Stone is released on Netflix on August 11.
