Hear about a pilot's adventure crossing the Atlantic

BRANCH COUNTY — Pilot Matt Branson will show videos he shot flying over the icebergs in the Atlantic last year during a public presentation Sunday for The Flying Club of Branch County.

This was part of Branson's epic adventure flying his single engine Maule airplane from his home in Mishawaka, Indiana to Greenland to compete in the Greenland Air Trophy event.

Flying club members hope Branson will fly the plane to Coldwater Sunday if the weather allows.

The public is invited to the free event at at 2 p.m. in the airport administration building south of U.S. 12, west of the city.

The Greenland Air Trophy is an annual competition for light aircraft pilots from Europe and North America to fly across the Atlantic to meet in Narsarsuaq, Greenland for precision landing and short take-off and landing competitions.

The event is considered the world's most remote aviation event. The Maule Branson flies is popular with bush pilots because of their low stall speed, tundra tires, and strut landing gear.

Branson flies as a commercial pilot for Southwest Airlines.

Cynthia Sigrist, of the Flying Club, said Branson’s wife, son, and daughter joined him in Greenland, then Iceland, Scotland, and Belgium for the overland flights.

Branson then flew the route backward back to Indiana.

Sigrist has known Branson for 20 years. “Their next trip is going to be the Aleutian Islands, 1,000 miles of little, tiny islands," she said.

Sigrist saw the videos. “Matt will share amazing stories and beautiful videos of his journey, including awesome footage of the icy cold North Atlantic, incredible take offs and landings in breathtaking locations and so much more.”
