Headlines in History 1935: City and County will close offices for Roosevelt visit Monday

What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

Dec. 3, 1906: “The city board of health feels that it now has the smallpox situation well in hand and that with every precaution there need be no cause for undue anxiety. Vaccination continues and the board hopes to have most persons vaccinated within a few days.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 4, 1916: “A toboggan will be erected in Rum Village park this winter. It will start on the hill at the foot of Kemble avenue and run for 500 yards along that street. There are no street intersections along Kemble avenue and for that reason the park board considers it a safe place for coasting.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 5, 1925: “A movement is underway by residents in the near vicinity of the Rubber Regenerating company, to abolish an alleged smoke nuisance that is caused by the burning of the company’s large coal pile adjacent to the plant. The board of public works will probably be presented with a petition at a meeting soon to eradicate the nuisance and to date more than 500 names have been secured for the petition.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 6, 1935: “A holiday spirit will reign Monday when President Franklin D. Roosevelt comes to South Bend. City and county offices will close during his stay in the city and at the University of Notre Dame, where he will receive an honorary LL.D. degree at a special convocation in the school’s gymnasium.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 7, 1949: “The South Bend and Studebaker corporation fire departments worked for three hours early today to snuff out a stubborn smouldering fire beneath piles of seat padding in a third floor storage room of Studebaker plant No. 1 in the 300 block of West Sample street.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 8, 1958: “Members of the Ardmore Lions Club brave snow and low temperatures to staff their Christmas tree lot on Mayflower Rd. south of Lincoln Way W. for the third year. Proceeds of the sales are used by the Lions Club to support youth activities and the purchase of Christmas baskets for needy families.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 9, 1965: “Popcorn was strung and cranberries were used with evergreen boughs and ornaments by members of the River Valley Garden Club when they decorated Solarium West 2 at Healthwin Hospital Tuesday evening. The members trimmed a tree for the hospital and made a Santa to be placed in the window, together with two hanging arrangements in other windows.” — The South Bend Tribune
