Heading to states! Cheboygan’s Ecker, Sidlauskas qualify for Division 2 track finals

SHEPHERD – The Cheboygan track and field team saw two athletes qualify for the MHSAA Division 2 state finals during a regional meet held at Shepherd on Saturday.

Leading the way for the Cheboygan girls was senior Bella Ecker, who qualified by finishing fourth in the high jump (5-1).

For the Cheboygan boys, junior Lucas Sidlauskas delivered a 144-9 throw to earn eighth and qualify in the discus.

The Division 2 state finals will take place in Hamilton on Saturday, June 1.

Cheboygan softball goes 2-1 at Ogemaw tournament

WEST BRANCH – The Cheboygan softball team finished 2-1 at the Ogemaw Heights tournament on Saturday.

Fueling the Chiefs (23-10) to a 19-1 victory over Lake City was Emily Clark, who went 4-for-4 and with a home run, a triple, a double, four RBIs and five runs scored. Recording two hits each were Emerson Eustice (six RBIs) and Tessa Lake. Presley Chamberlain (RBI, four runs), Nataleigh Blaisdell (RBI, two runs), Amelia Johnson (RBI, run), Jordan Ashley (RBI, run), Marley Couture (RBI), Ella Kosanke (RBI), Libby VanFleet (run) and Hannah Whippo (run) added a hit apiece. Emerson Eustice was the winning pitcher, striking out 11 and allowing three hits in five innings.

Clark’s four hits, including two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored fueled the Chiefs to an 11-0 victory over the Tawas Dodgers in their second contest. Tallying three hits was Lake (RBI, three runs), while Chamberlain (two doubles, two RBIs, two runs), Couture (RBI, run) and VanFleet (double, RBI) each had two hits. Ashley (two RBIs), Eustice (RBI), Johnson (RBI, run) and Blaisdell chipped in with a hit apiece. VanFleet was the winning pitcher, striking out 10 and surrendering one hit in six innings.

However, Cheboygan ended its day with a 7-5 loss to Ogemaw Heights. Eustice (three RBIs, run) and Couture (run) each homered for the Chiefs, who received a team-high three hits from Chamberlain (two runs). Whippo registered a hit and VanFleet knocked in a run. VanFleet was the losing pitcher, striking out four, scattering 10 hits and walking one in five innings.

Cheboygan travels to Inland Lakes (15-7) on Monday.

Inland Lakes baseball falls to Beal City, Big Rapids

BIG RAPIDS – The Inland Lakes baseball team suffered a pair of losses at the Big Rapids tournament on Saturday.

In a 12-1 defeat to Beal City, Jake Willey registered the lone hit for the Bulldogs. Connor Wallace was the losing pitcher, striking out eight, allowing four hits and walking one in five innings.

Aidan Fenstermaker tripled and knocked in a run for the Bulldogs, who lost 7-4 to Big Rapids in their second contest. Willey (RBI), Wallace (RBI) and Ty Kolly (two runs) recorded a hit apiece. Fenstermaker took the loss on the mound, striking out three, surrendering five hits and walking five in 4 1/3 innings.

Inland Lakes (20-3) hosts Cheboygan (14-15) on Monday.
