Heading to Roscoe this Memorial Day to support local veterans? Here's where to line up

Thinking of heading to Roscoe this Memorial Day to show support for a parade that was almost canceled this year because of lack of participation?

Village officials released details on a new, shorter route for the parade, which will take place at 10 a.m. Monday in downtown Roscoe.

Here's what you need to know.

The parade route is as follows.

Kickoff will be just north of Village Hall by the bridge on Main Street. From there, the parade will proceed north along Main Street to Harrison Street and head east to the Roscoe Cemetery, 5949 Harrison St. A solemn ceremony will take place at the cemetery to honor fallen heroes of Roscoe.

Those not attending the ceremony can continue on to Sixth Street and disperse at Broad Street.

Participants are asked to line up at 9:30 a.m. on Main Street, just north of Presley Place, in front of the Roscoe Police Department.

Roscoe's VFW almost didn't get a permit for this year's parade.

The event is a long-standing tradition in the village but has struggled in recent years with low turnout.

VFW leaders told village leaders that they were working on growing the parade back to pre-COVID levels.

"This parade has been a longtime tradition in Roscoe, and it is a meaningful way for our community to come together and honor those who have given so much for our freedom," Village President Carol Gustafson said in a news release.
