After a fatal crash Friday on Idaho 55, motorists headed toward Lake Cascade and McCall on the well-traveled highway encountered long delays.

The crash, between Horseshoe Bend and Banks, occurred at around 12:30 p.m. and was expected to cause delays on the highway for a lengthy amount of time, according to the Idaho Transportation Department. The Boise County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to the area after a vehicle veered into the river. It’s unclear how many people were in the vehicle, but the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that one person died.

Those involved in the crash will be identified once the family is notified, and Boise County officials said an investigation is ongoing.

The crash was still causing delays late Friday afternoon. ITD said that both lanes were open but that “traffic is moving slowly.”

Ellen Mattila, a spokesperson for the transportation department, told the Idaho Statesman by phone at around 4:45 p.m. that drivers should be on the lookout for emergency vehicles, and added that traffic was “slow going.” ITD recommended that motorists check 511.idaho.gov before traveling.
