The “Degrassi” Reboot Is No Longer HappeningHBO Max

Before Euphoria, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and all of the other high school-based teen dramedies we now know and love, there was Degrassi. The Canadian series, which served as the introduction for stars like Drake and Cassie Steele, was originally headed for a reboot on HBO Max. But on November 3, Variety announced that the Degrassi revival series is no longer happening.

In January 2022, the outlet reported that the streaming service had greenlit a reboot series and secured the rights for all 14 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation. Originally created in 1979, the Toronto-based series garnered international acclaim for the show that aired from 2001 to 2015.

This new 10-episode reboot, which would have been the sixth series in the Degrassi franchise, was scheduled to debut in 2023 and showcase “the painful high school experience of self-discovery by following a group of Toronto students and faculty coping with events that both bring them together and tear them apart.”

The franchise is owned by WildBrain, whose president Josh Scherba dished back in January, “Now in its fourth decade, ‘Degrassi’ is one of those beloved evergreen properties that demand to be refreshed for each new generation.” But following the announcement of the Warner Bros. and Discovery Plus merger, the Degrassi reboot is one of many projects to get shut down, Variety reports.

HBO Max has yet to comment on the show’s cancellation.
