Hawaii hotel locked down for hours after armed Navy man shoots through door, dies by suicide

An armed man who barricaded himself inside his room at a resort hotel in Hawaii and shot at security staff through the closed door was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sunday morning, according to officials.

The hours-long lockdown began Saturday evening around 6 p.m. at the Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu after a report of shots fired from the fourth floor, according to Hawaii News Now.

Responding police evacuated the beach and the surrounding guest rooms and herded more than 100 people into the hotel ballroom and lobby.

The man is a member of the Navy and lives on Oahu, home to several military bases, according to Hawaii News Now. His military commander has reportedly responded to the hotel to try to help.

Police said that the suspect first fired when hotel security knocked on his door.

“Thankfully, the security guard wasn’t standing in front of the door,” Police Capt. Brian Lynch told reporters outside the hotel.

Early Sunday morning, SWAT breached the hotel room and found the suspect dead inside, police told Hawaii News Now.

No one else was reported injured during the incident.

According to KITV4, the deceased man, who still has not been identified fully, was described as 40-years-old. He reportedly told is family he was suicidal. Honolulu police said the man would have been charged with attempted murder and reckless endangerment if he had lived.
