Hat tricks by Dann, Lamb spark Cheboygan soccer to win at NMCA

Updated

BURT LAKE – The Cheboygan boys soccer team rediscovered its scoring mojo on Tuesday night.

Following three consecutive disappointing results – including a lopsided loss at Ogemaw Heights last week – the Chiefs responded by capturing an 8-2 victory at Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy.

Sparking the Chiefs (3-3-1) were seniors Jaxon Dann and Kelsey Lamb, who each netted hat tricks in the winning display. Luke Marsh and Killian Miller chipped in with a goal apiece.

While the Chiefs earned victory, head coach Bob Miller still wants to see more cohesiveness and communication from his squad going forward.

“We need to make a decision – play as a team or have a mediocre season,” said Miller. “When we communicate as a team, we produce. When we don’t communicate and play as individuals, we don’t produce. A lot of people like to say they make a difference. Some try, others do. There are no results from talking about it. You have to be it.”

Onaway volleyball struggles in four-set home loss to Mancelona

ONAWAY – The start to the Ski Valley season was a disappointing one for the Onaway volleyball team, which suffered a 3-1 (25-13, 15-25, 19-25, 16-25) home loss to Mancelona on Tuesday.

“The result was not what we expected or hoped for,” said Onaway coach Steve Watson. “It was a disappointing performance overall. The style Mancelona played was unconventional and no question, that can be off putting, but we’ve shown our quality several times this season so we should have been able to play better than we did tonight. Seventeen kills with 16 errors for the whole night tells a lot of the story.

“I think we’re a smarter team, and definitely a more skilled team than we showed tonight.”

For the Cardinals (8-4-1, 0-1 Ski Valley), Grace Watson led with 27 digs, four kills and seven assists, while Ema DeMaestri tallied seven kills and 11 digs, Sadie Decker had four kills and 10 digs, and Carley Karsten added six assists and five digs. Ella Lintz and Amya Janusky finished with 19 and 10 digs respectively.

Onaway heads to the Petoskey tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9.
