If there’s one thing the internet loves to do, it’s comment on and speculate about the relationships and personal lives of famous people. A favorite obsession? The blossoming romance between Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde. While a bunch of fans find their ’ship super cute, there are a few haters in the mix who have l-o-t-s to say about it, mainly because of their 10-year age gap. (Olivia is 38, while Harry is 28.)

In the 2022 September issue cover story of Rolling Stone, Harry opened up about navigating all of this, particularly the small subset of his usually-super-kind fans who tend to be hateful to his partners online. “That obviously doesn’t make me feel good,” he told the outlet tenderly, careful not to demonize his entire fan base.

Harry also said he has to brief his partners super early in the ’ship—like, second-date-early, y’all—on what they may be in for from his hard-core fans. “Can you imagine,” he told the outlet, “going on a second date with someone and being like, ‘Okay, there’s this corner of the thing, and they’re going to say this, and it’s going to be really crazy, and they’re going to be really mean, and it’s not real…but anyway, what do you want to eat?’”

Olivia was described as “diplomatic” when asked how she’s experienced Harry’s fans. While she acknowledged that as a whole, Harry’s fans are “deeply loving people,” she also told the interviewer Brittany Spanos, “What I don’t understand about the cruelty you’re referencing is that that kind of toxic negativity is the antithesis of Harry and everything he puts out there. I don’t personally believe the hateful energy defines his fan base at all. The majority of them are true champions of kindness.”

Harry and Olivia met on the set of the movie Don’t Worry Darling, which Olivia directed. He joined the cast in fall 2020, and by January 2021, the duo were spotted holding hands at a wedding—which, naturally, caused the internet to lose its damn mind. Since then, it’s been nothing but Olivia shamelessly dancing at his shows, Harry thinking Olivia is too cool for him, international vacays, and, yep, even engagement rumors.

Glad these two aren’t letting the haters stop them from doing their thang!
