A new (and pretty dramatic-seeming) royal book called Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown is here to shed some light on the extremely tense relationship between Prince Harry and Prince William, and it's taking us allllll the way back to 2019. This was the year that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan went on royal tour, when Meghan revealed she was having a difficult time to ITV reporter Tom Bradby, who asked how she was.

Meanwhile, Harry—asked about the rumored rift between him and William—said "We are certainly on different paths at the moment . . . As brothers, you know, you have good days, you have bad days."

According to Valentine Low's book (via The Mirror and The Daily Mail) headlines covering Meghan and Harry's quotes came out as Prince William and Kate Middleton were on a tour of Pakistan. William in particular was "taken aback" by the couples' unhappiness, and realized "they were in crisis." He reportedly sent his brother a WhatsApp message to ask for a meeting, and while initially "Harry was in favor," he was worried about who else would know. William then allegedly informed Harry that he'd have to tell his private secretary, and at this point Harry—as The Mirror put it—sent him a blunt two-word response saying "don't come."

Turns out Harry was concerned that William's staff would "leak the visit to the Press," and while the brothers have since had a chance to talk, Meghan and Harry obviously made the decision to eventually step away from royal duties and lead a more independent life in America. However! The couples did recently spend time together in England amid Queen Elizabeth's funeral, so here's to hoping they can mend some fences.
