Harris speaks in Arizona after abortion ruling: Watch live

Vice President Harris is making a campaign appearance Friday afternoon in Tucson, Ariz., to address recent actions in the state that would ban most abortions. Harris has taken the lead in White House advocacy of women’s health issues, and the Biden administration has made restoring nationwide access to abortion a priority in its campaign for a second term.

This week, Arizona’s Supreme Court allowed the reinstatement of a 19th-century law that would make abortion illegal in all cases other than threats to the life of the mother.

Some abortion opponents, such as former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R), who helped the state enact a ban on abortions at 15 weeks in 2022, have voiced opposition to the sweeping new restrictions. Former President Trump told reporters Wednesday that he believes Arizona’s latest policy is excessive, though he continues to campaign on his role in bringing about the end of Roe v. Wade.

Abortion rights advocates believe the wave of new laws criminalizing abortions could backfire on their sponsors in November.

The vice president is scheduled to speak beginning at 5:30 p.m. EDT.
