Who should be the Happy State Bank Male and Female High School Athletes of the Week?

Soccer is in the stretch run of the season and track and baseball area heating up and several stars are nominated for the Happy State Bank male and female high school athlete of the week.

The Globe-News is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Happy State Bank male and female Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced thereafter.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. each Monday and can be submitted through email at sports@amarillo.com.

Please include statistics from the week's games and any pertinent information or honors.

Male Finalists

• Adam Burlison, Amarillo boys track & field — Burlison set a new school record with a fifth-place finish in the invitational division of the 1,600-meter run at the Texas Relays, finishing fifth against a field of college competitors, clocking 4:06.52.

• Carson Haffner, Randall baseball — Haffner was 3 for 3 with a double, triple and two runs scored and pitched a complete game three-hit shutout in the Raiders 5-0 win against Borger.

• Diego Jerez, Pampa boys soccer — Jerez scored two goals for Pampa in a high-scoring bi-district contest against Wichita Falls.

• Ricardo Mendez, Caprock boys soccer — The Caprock goalkeeper made nine saves and notched one shutout in helping the Longhorns upend Lubbock-Cooper and El Paso Bel Air to advance to the regional quarterfinals.

• Aviel Montes, Perryton boys soccer — Montes scored two goals as the Rangers won their first playoff match in program history with a 3-2 win against Mineral Wells.

• Brycen Williams, West Plains boys track & field — Williams won the high jump with a clearance of 6-4 and was second in the long jump (20-10) at the 76th Annual Panhandle Relays.

Female Finalists

• Ashtyn Collins, River Road girls track & field — Collins won the 200 and 400 at the 76th Annual Panhandle Relays also helping River Road to a second-place finish in the 1,600 relay.

• Emily Gaines, Dalhart girls tennis — Gaines won the Spearman tennis tournament girls singles draw after winning the Borger tennis tournament earlier this season as she attempts to return to the regional tennis tournament.

• Maddie Hight, Canyon softball — Hight went 2 for 3 with four RBIs in a win against Hereford and 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs against Dumas.

• Jaylen Kaps, West Plains softball — The sophomore pitcher set a career mark with 18 strikeouts against Borger and topped it with 20 strikeouts against Pampa and is now nearing 500 strikeouts in her two years of varsity play.

• Kyndal McClain, Randall girls soccer — The freshman propelled the Raiders to the regional quarterfinals with a pair of hat tricks against Mineral Wells and Snyder, tallying six goals and one assist in two playoff matches.

• Mikala Watson, Tascosa girls soccer — The Tascosa freshman goalkeeper continued her stellar play in net from the regular season, in which she posted 16 shutouts, helping the Rebels advance to the regional quarterfinals with wins against Lubbock-Cooper and El Paso Del Valle.
