Who should be the Happy State Bank Male and Female High School Athletes of the Week?

The softball playoffs are here and other spring sports are capping their season with state tournaments and several top performers are nominated for the Happy State Bank male and female high school athlete of the week.

The Globe-News is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Happy State Bank male and female Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close Thursday and the winners will be announced thereafter.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. each Monday and can be submitted through email at sports@amarillo.com.

Please include statistics from the week's games and any pertinent information or honors.

Male Finalists

• Bryce Braden, Stratford boys track & field — Braden qualified for the UIL State Track meet in the discus and shot put in Class 2A.

• Stephen Cowan, Gruver baseball — Cowan was 2 for 3 with a double, run and three RBIs to go with four innings on the mound, allowing two hits and no runs with seven strikeouts as the Greyhounds earned a share of the District 1-2A championship.

• Sawyer Francis, Silverton boys track & field — Francis advanced to the UIL State Track meet in 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump.

• Kade Gavina, Bushland baseball — Gavina helped the Falcons cap their undefeated run through district and 17th consecutive title with a 28-5 rout of Dalhart. Gavina was a terror at the plate going 4 for 4 with two home runs, two doubles, a walk and seven RBI.

• Brekken Melton, Randall baseball — The Raiders third baseman went 2 for 2 with a triple, a run and four RBIs as he helped his team upend Pampa 11-1 in five innings.

Female Finalists

• Addi Britten, Amarillo High girls golf — Britten shot 74-74—148 to finish tied for second place in the medalist standings with her teammate Charlee Thacker as they led AHS Black to the Region I-5A team title and a state tournament berth.

• Maigyn Ellis, Vega girls golf — Ellis finished second in the medalist standings at the Region I-2A girls golf tournament with a 92-93—185 to qualify for the UIL State Tournament.

• Vida Fierro, Dumas softball — Fierro helped the Demonettes sweep Seminole in a bi-district playoff series going 6 for 7 with two home runs and six RBIs in two wins.

• Kynleigh Kirby, Pampa softball — Kirby threw a three-hit shutout to help the Harvesters win a decisive Game 3 in their bi-district series against Monahans 9-0.

• Madi Lee, Canyon girls powerlifting — Lee was the 2024 Texas Women’s Unequipped Powerlifting State Champions topping all classes and divisions while setting records in squat and bench. She is the first Canyon ISD state powerlifting champion and has committed to Midland University to lift collegiately.
