Happy Gilmore star Christopher McDonald has claimed that Adam Sandler is working on a sequel to the comedy.

The 1996 film followed the titular character (Sandler) as he takes the golf world by storm with his uncompromising and unorthodox methods, leading to run-ins with several officials and the snooty Shooter McGavin (McDonald).

Nearly 30 years have elapsed since Happy caused a furore on the fairways and greens, but McDonald has hinted that we could soon see the character once again as he shared that he recently met Sandler.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’” the actor told Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.

McDonald, who later joked that his comments should be “cut” as he didn’t want to be branded as a “liar”, added: “He did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

If the project does come to fruition, it is likely it will be a Netflix production due to Sandler’s agreement with the streamer via his production company Happy Madison Productions, though Netflix are yet to comment on the speculation.

Digital Spy has reached out to Sandler's representatives for comment.

Whilst the sequel is yet to be confirmed, Sandler did reprise his role as the character back in 2021 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the comedy, smashing a golf ball in typically Happy fashion as he called out Shooter.

McDonald subsequently responded to the video by playing Shooter, saying: “Nice drive Gilmore. 25 years huh? Let's see if it's Shooter's tour – check it out. Oh yeah, it's all about the short game. Drive for show, putt for the dough.”
