Hanover rides undefeated boys' tennis season into YAIAA tournaments

Denny Garman has spent the last several years rebuilding the Hanover boys' tennis team.

Five years ago the Nighthawks won just one division match and participation numbers were low. Over the last three seasons Garman has watched his roster grow into the high 20s with excellent results.

Two years ago they shared the Division II title with Gettysburg and Susquehannock and last year they finished one game out of first. This year the Nighthawks went undefeated and claimed the title outright.

They did it without their projected No. 1 singles player and while mourning one of their teammates.

Garman knew it was going to be a difficult season after senior Dylan Arvizu Morales and his mother were killed by his father on Dec. 28. Morales was close with his teammates, and they used that as motivation throughout the season.

"As a team we talked about him every single day before we practiced or played a match," Garman said. "His nickname was Pretty Boy Flaco ... anytime we broke out of a huddle, that was our chant. The entire season was for him."

Garman said his team's effort was "incredible this year," even after prospective No. 1 singles player Yahir Corona tore his ACL two weeks before the season started and hasn't played.

That left Cullen Nakielny and Brian Corona to battle it out to play at No. 1, with Nakielny handling most of those duties.

Both players are among the top Class 2A seeds in the YAIAA singles tournament that starts with two rounds on Thursday. Nakielny is the fifth seed, and Corona is the No. 7 seed.

Bermudian Springs' Parker Sanders is the 2A's top seed, followed by Delone Catholic's Collin Kuhn, Littlestown's Cyrus Marshall and West York's Ryan Steele.

Cullen Nakielny, left, Brian Corona, center, and Nolan Chronister led Hanover to an undefeated season and the Division II title.

Separate Class 3A and 2A tournaments will begin at 2 p.m. at Red Lion and South Western high schools on Thursday, with quarters and semifinals following on Friday at South Western. Finals will be played on Saturday at South Western.

Dallastown continued running through Division I opponents to finish with the title. The Wildcats' only loss came to District 3 foe Hempfield last week.

Defending champion Hayden Koons is the Class 3A top seed, and teammate Jacob Horn is the third seed. Six Wildcats will be playing in the tournament. Central York's Kai MacLennon is the No. 2 seed.

The 2A and 3A doubles tournaments will be held April 29-30 at the same schools. Dallastown's Koons and Horn are the top 3A seeds and Bermudian Springs' Sanders and Tyler Chenault are the top 2A seeds.

This post will be updated with results and new pairings as they become available.
