Captain Tom’s Daughter admits keeping cash from books during Piers Morgan interview - live

Captain Sir Tom Moore’s daughter has admitted keeping £800,000 from three books the late army veteran had written, despite the prologue of one of them suggesting the money would go to charity.

Hannah Ingram-Moore told Piers Morgan that her late father had wanted his family to keep the profits in Club Nook Ltd, a firm that is separate from the Captain Tom Foundation.

In a clip released ahead of the interview, which is being aired this evening, she said that her father “specifically” wanted her to keep the book profits.

She insisted there was no suggestion anyone who purchased the books thought the money was going to charity, but the prologue of Sir Tom’s book says it is a “chance to raise even more money for the charitable foundation now established in my name.”

The Independent exclusively revealed last year the foundation had paid tens of thousands of pounds to companies run by Ingram-Moore and her husband.

She will also address her “regret” over building a spa and pool complex at their Grade II listed home in Bedfordshire, despite planning applications being submitted in the foundation’s name.

The application was completed using the couple’s names, but allegedly namechecked the foundation as part of the design and access and heritage statement.

“At no time were The Captain Tom Foundation’s independent trustees aware of planning permissions made by Mr and Mrs Ingram-Moore purporting to be in the foundation’s name”, the charity’s trustees told The Sun.

Captain Tom’s daughter was paid £70,000 as donations fell

14:40 , Athena Stavrou

A watchdog’s intervention into the Captain Tom Foundation had a “massive adverse impact” on fundraising, the charity’s latest accounts state, while also showing the late veteran’s daughter received more than £70,000 in salary and expenses payments.

The Charity Commission launched an inquiry into the foundation in June last year, after identifying concerns about the charity’s management and independence from Sir Tom’s family.

The foundation’s latest accounts, which were published in early September, show that for the nine months from August 2021 to April 2022, Sir Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, received a gross salary of £63,750 in her role as interim chief executive officer (CEO).

The Charity Commission had consented to an annual salary of £85,000.

She also received £7,602 in expense payments for travel and administration between June 2021 and November 2022.

How Captain Tom Moore’s legacy became mired in controversy

15:00 , Athena Stavrou

When Captain Sir Tom Moore began his mission to walk 100 lengths of his Bedfordshire garden in 2020, few could have imagined the intense interest that swept the country.

“Tom’s 100th Birthday Walk for the NHS” initially hoped to raise £1,000 in donations for NHS Charities Together but quickly became a sensation, its first target met in just four days before it eventually reached £32.8m.

An icon of British public-spiritedness in the face of adversity, celebrated across the land with everything from buses and trains to police dogs named in his honour, Captain Tom Moore died on 2 February 2021 shortly after having been hospitalised with pneumonia and, inevitably, Covid-19.

The first suggestion that the legacy of his fundraising exploits might be rather more complicated emerged a year later when it was reported on 8 February 2022 that The Captain Tom Foundation, incorporated on 5 May 2020 to administer the donations collected from his inspirational walks, had spent more on management fees than it had released in grants.

What else will be addressed in the interview?

15:26 , Athena Stavrou

In addition to questions about her keeping book profits, Hannah Ingram-Moore will also be questioned about her decision to accept a payment of £18,000 for attending the Virgin Media 02 Captain Tom Foundation Connector Awards in 2021, despite already being paid as the charity’s chief executive.

Of the money paid to the family’s company the Maytrix Group, only £2,000 went to charity while Ms Ingram-Moore kept £16,000.

Becoming tearful, she said: “I think it’s all very easy to look back and think I should have made different decisions, but I hadn’t planned on being the CEO.”
