A Hallmark Christmas Movie With a Sex Scene? Don’t Hold Your Breath

Ever wish Hallmark Channel’s Christmas movies would go just a teensy bit further? A rated R (or even PG-13) film is likely never going to happen, says the cabler.

When asked during the network’s Television Critics Association press tour whether it would lean into more grown-up romance stories akin to what Lifetime aired this past holiday season, the question was met with a resounding “no.”

“In a Christmas movie? No,” Hallmark Media’s EVP of programming Lisa Hamilton Daly told our sister pub Variety. “Our movies are very much leading up to that final kiss. It’s all built up to that.”

Daly said that while some of the kisses may be a little more risqué than others, Hallmark still wants to keep its content family friendly.

“Some of those kisses go a little longer, they get a little spicier, but we are never going to be anything but pretty much PG,” she added. “I consider us to be pretty living room friendly. You know your kids are never going to walk in and you’d have to turn it off.”

Lifetime aired its first-ever Christmas movie sex scene with A Cowboy Christmas Romance, which premiered Dec. 9, 2023. The film — which stars One Tree Hill‘s Jana Kramer and Hit the Floor‘s Adam Senn — included a much-hyped scene between its two leads, which lasted approximately 90 seconds. According to TVLine’s own Andy Swift, the scene was “hot enough to land Lifetime on Santa’s naughty list, but also tame enough to avoid the ire of the Parents Television Council.”
